Summary

Ubisoft is planning to release an anniversary edition ofBeyond Good and Evil, according to a newly surfaced leak. The iconic action adventure and one ofMichel Ancel’s best gameswill have its 20th anniversary in November.

Beyond Good and Evilis one of the brightest highlights of the sixth console generation, having received widespread praise for its unique blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and compelling stealth sections, as well as a distinctive visual style paired with a memorable narrative. And since its sequel still hasn’t materialized after some 15 years' worth of development hell,Beyond Good and Evilremains one ofUbisoft’s best standalone gamesto this day.

The gaming giant is now planning to revisit its iconic title with a special anniversary edition, according to a newly published ESRB rating. The classification identifies the rerelease asBeyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. Ubisoft is apparently planning to bring the game to PC, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5, as per the same listing.

While the very name of the product doesn’t seem to imply that the anniversary edition will be anything more than an upscaled rerelease ofBeyond Good and Evil, the ESRB did rate the title as appropriate for everyone over the age of ten. This is potentially significant because it differs from the Teen classification that the agency attached to the original game andBeyond Good and Evil HD, a 1080p remaster released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. The ESRB rating standards did not undergo any significant changes over the last two decades that could explain this classification difference, assuming the anniversary edition ofBeyond Good and Evilis identical to the 2003 title in terms of content.

While not unwelcome,Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Editionlikely isn’t the game that most fans of the original are currently hoping for. But seeing howBeyond Good and Evil 2recently seized the title of the most-delayed AAA game ever, this incoming rerelease will plausibly be the only “new” addition to Ubisoft’s would-be series in the foreseeable future.

Beyond Good and Evilwon’t be the only classic Ubisoft game that’s likely to enjoy some renewed interest in the coming months. A similar fate might awaitDark Messiah of Might and Magic, a unique first-person ARPG developed by Arkane Studios in 2006. Namely, a group of modders justreceived Ubisoft’s blessing to revive this iconic gamewith a full-featured modding SDK, having already put out a ray-tracing toolkit for the title and announced plans for a co-op mod.

Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Editionis reportedly in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
