The aforementioned period in which alleged witchcraft was persecuted the most within Europe fell under thereign of the Holy Roman Empire. An entirely separate entity from the much earlier Roman Empire, the Holy Roman Empire spanned most of the continent, and was for some time the mightiest and most powerful faction in all of Europe.
As to be expected, religion played a large role in the running of this large political entity, with Catholicism and Protestantism being prominent religions within many Holy Roman Empire territories. These regions saw the widespread persecution of women, usually elders, in the name of religion and ridding the lands of perceived witchcraft. The worst of these trials were held in modern-day Germany and Austria, and soit is likely thatHexewill be set in these areas.
This level of persecution under a religious guise is the exact kind of behavior that theAssassin’s Creedfranchise has historically portrayed the Templar Order as partaking in, with it being more than likely thatHexewill feature Templars in high-ranking roles in the Holy Roman Empire. The reign of this Empire roughly coincides with thetransition of the Order of the Ancients into the Templar Order, andHexecould fascinatingly portray how the Templar’s used the Holy Roman Empire to regain a foothold of international power and influence over the masses.
