Players will likely start with an assault rifle inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2and there is a good chance that they may never want to switch off of this class. Because of so many diverse game modes, expert gamers need guns that can participate at every range and this is where assault rifles shine.

The majority of battles inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2will be at mid-range, perfect for assault rifles. But they are also adequately accurate at long distances and capable in tight quarters. When ranking assault rifles, players should remember that the best of the bunch tend to be the ones most lethal in every situation.

The franchise has always been quick to nerf guns that see their win rates get too high and buff weapons that see their win rates drop off. The changes may be subtle, but in a game that differentiates time to kill by milliseconds, that’s all it takes to see something’s usage go from top to bottom. This list has been overhauled, looking at the loadouts of the best players and the most successful loadouts of the community at large.
11TAQ-56
The TAQ-56 needs to be last on this list due to being either the same or worse than the starting M4 in every category. Usually, when statistics like this occur within a class, the gun offers more rounds or an easier magazine to reload. But that’s not true for the TAQ-56, it’s just worse across the board.
There is also a notable penalty for hits that aren’t headshots from this gun. Players who use this are at a disadvantage in about every situation. Unless players get some kills withthe best field upgrades, they’re in for a tough match.
10Kastov-74U
The Kastov-74U isn’t just tied for last, it’s dead last in two different categories: accuracy and recoil control. The rest of the statistics are in the top half, but these two attributes alone make the weapon inadvisable to use in any way except as an SMG.
Like an SMG, the damage for up-close headshots is indeed astounding. But there is a large damage drop off at 30 meters and it only gets worse from there. Better to use theoverpowered throwing knivesthan to try and make this a superior assault rifle.
9Kastov 545
When it comes to mobility and mod-range damage, the Kastov 545 shines as one of the best assault rifles available. Unfortunately, it’s one of the worst at short ranges and long ranges, so keeping opponents in the medium range is critical.

Althoughteammate dots can be problematic, the gun is best used in conjunction with a squad that can cover short and long ranges. The handling, recoil, and accuracy are also not great, so prepare to tune up the gun with this in mind.
8Kastov 762
Tied for the highest damage from long-range the game among assault rifles, the stopping power on the Kastov 762 is second to none. At shots above 30 meters, this is the best in its class in terms of time to kill. This covers most mid-range battles as well.
For players quick on the trigger, this is useful. However, be warned that unless players are extremely quick on the trigger, the rest of the attributes, such as mobility, handling, recoil control, and accuracy, are average or below. So long as players don’t have ahorrible misthrow on grenadesup close, the Kastov 762’s weaknesses can be overcome.
7M16
The M16 has the worst mobility of all the assault rifles, so prepare to repurpose this as more of a marksman rifle than a true assault rifle when it comes to running around. That can be compensated for by experts who understand chokepoints on thepopular new mapsand find a place to safely fire from.

The damage is also poor not great but every other statistic is above average. When tuned properly, some may find these downsides can be compensated for.
6M13B
Fights are often won based on who can aim and start shooting the fastest. Despite the awful damage on the M13B, being tops in both fire rate and handling is superior to outright stopping power in most cases of mid-range combat.
To get even more out of the fire rate,tune the weapon upand it becomes both a capable SMG and an assault rifle. This gun surprisingly has no damage dropoff after 40 meters, so players who can fight through the recoil will find it’s like a nicely-ranged SMG.
5Lachmann-556
Bad handling, mobility, and damage are poison to standard assault rifles, but the Lachmann-556 is great in every other way. Used as an automatic marksman or sniper rifle, this unique weapon inspires specific types of loadouts.
Like the M4, the Lachmann-556 registers all hits as headshots but its damage is a step down from the M4.Get the graphics settings adjustedto see enemies clearly from the range that the gun is safe from.

Players have strong feelings one way or the other about the STB 556. Tops in both accuracy and recoil control, players who excel at aiming won’t need to worry that their gun is letting them down. It’s time to kill under 45 meters is also among the best.
The fire rate is the worst and the mobility and handling aren’t helpful either, to be sure. This is not a gun to be used when running around during a firefight. But when aiming and moving forward, it’s got some headshot potential that the other assault rifles lack. Combined withthe best aim settings, players will only have themselves to blame for the rare instances that they miss.
3Iso Hemlock
The Iso Hemlock finds itself tied with the Kastov 762 for best damage at medium and longer ranges. The big difference is that it has better recoil control and mobility. As a tradeoff, the reload animation is a bit longer and the leg shots are slightly penalized over the Kastov 762 which treats legs shots as torse hits.
This is a tradeoff that virtually every user will make. When aiming from range, legs and feet are incidental strikes and reload time is not a big deal. Players that want to use an assault rifle at range should use the Iso Hemlock. The damage remains one of the best up close as well. Some players haveglitches that give them impressive killstreaksbut the rest will use something like the Iso Hemlock.
2Chimera
It looks likemore night maps are coming to the gameand that means a greater need for assault rifles that can handle close encounters. No assault rifle does more lethal headshot damage at close range than the Chimera, making it a great choice for high-octane gamers that have solid accuracy in close quarters.
The Chimera is also tied for second place in terms of recoil control, so those who are worried about this weapon being just another SMG reskinned to be an assault rifle need not worry. Players who want an assault rifle that isn’t just useful but excels in close combat have their choice.
