God of War Ragnarokis currently tied with its 2018 predecessor at 94 on Metacritic. That is fitting because the game ultimately feels like the same experience. There are plenty of new twists and turns for the series and some new additions to the gameplay.

However, the structure ofGod of War Ragnarokis almost identical from hugging walls to mask load times to sailing around small bays. It doesn’t feel like a bigger world which may be okay with some. Others hoping for a more evolutionary step forward may be disappointed. There are other issues with the game too but these could be fixed with a patch.

6Add A Puzzle Skip

One of the more frustrating partsof action gameslikeGod of War Ragnarokis the puzzles. Solving puzzles may not be what players are purchasing the game for in the first place. Another recently released AAA game,Gotham Knights, seemingly knew this was the case. Most of the puzzles in the game offered players a skip-to-solution button meaning that they could get back into the action quicker.

This was not the case for environmental puzzles, but there aren’t many in Gotham Knights, to begin with.God of War Ragnarokshould implement a skip-to-solution button as well or something similar. Since Atreus and Mimir talk to Kratos on a constant level, the developers could give side characters more hints for the player. They givesome to Kratosalready but it takes a while and they aren’t always clear.

5Add A Photo Mode

This is one of the things the developers have already promised will be in a patch at some point. The photo mode inthe 2018 reboottook a bit as well but when it became available, it was a great feature. It’s a miracle thatGod of War Ragnaroklaunched at all as this year has been plagued with delays from Square Enix’sForspokento WB Interactive’sHogwarts Legacy.

The developers haven’t given any indication of when the photo mode will be ready which is a bummer. It’ll be nice to get it eventually but it doesn’t help players who are currently going through the campaign and are missing good photographic opportunities. It’s always good to have a reason to replay a game though.

4Add Co-Op

Atreus started offwithout offering much help in the 2018 reboot. He is more capable now than ever before thanks to his training and aging between that game andGod of War Ragnarok. Atreus is a mighty warrior and players get the opportunity to go through side missions with him on occasion. This means that the developers put more thought into their mechanics.

It would make sense then to put it in a co-op mode. While there are times when Kratos, Atreus, orother playable charactersare left alone, about 80% of the time they are accompanied by an AI-driven partner. There are more opportunities for players to join up with someone else than before. Putting in an online option would be ideal for players to take over AI partners, but it might be easier for the developers to create a local co-op mode instead. This could eliminate the need for Ressurection Stones too, which would save some materials.

3Add A Mini-Map

This game is once again not quite an open-world game akin to another big action title from 2022,Elden Ring.God of War Ragnarokis filled with small hub areas players can explore and come back to once theyunlocked new abilitiesor pieces of gear. The game is a Metroidvania in that aspect, asking players to retrace their steps to uncover secrets.

There is a map players can reference in the character menu, but there is no mini-map. Adding a mini-map would make exploring easier since players wouldn’t have to rely on dipping back into the menu every time they wanted to check something. It’s hard to believethat action gameslikeGod of War Ragnarokcan launch without basic features such as a mini-map but that’s where patches come in.

2Add A Waypoint

Dead Spaceis probably not the first game to do this, but its waypoint system is still one of the best in the industry. Clicking on the analog stick would give players a guiding light on where they needed to go next.God of War Ragnarokdoes have a compass that shows players the general direction of the main quest or a side quest.

However, there is no light or anything to point players in a better direction. Giving Kratos some kind of insight, like the various abilities the Batman family has inGotham Knights, could help with those aforementioned puzzle problems too. It can be hard to tell where to go sometimes, so a guiding light or some kind of detection mechanic could save players from getting stuck.

1Return To Boat Option

Like the 2018 reboot, players will get the opportunity to sail around bays with many side locations just begging to be explored. There are other modes of transportation introduced inGod of War Ragnarokas well. For example, players can run around in a desert hub world with some dog-like creatures pulling a sled.

Whenever an objective is complete within one of these side areas, players must retrace their steps to get back to their boat, sled, or other modes of transportation. It would be nice if players could get an item, or an option in the menu, to transport them back to their vehicle. Implementing fast travel locally without the use of the gates would also be a plus.
