The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, the new expansion for the massively popular roguelikeThe Binding of Isaac,has seen the game receive a major surge in its player base. While the game has certainly never wanted for popularity,Repentancehas spiked the game’s concurrent player count following its release at the end of March.
The surge of players rose to 61,272 on April 3, just under 9000 away from the game’s all time peak in 2015. These numbers see the single player title battling with the likes ofWarframeandDestiny 2in terms of player count on Steam. The SteamSpy algorithm gives the average user playtime ofThe Binding of Isaacat a whopping 135 hours, a testament to the deceiving depth found in the roguelike. With more to discover, these numbers are liable to keep climbing as playersrepeatedly run through shifting levels borne of protagonist Isaac’s broken mind.

For a game that originally came out nearly a decade ago to have such a loyal fanbase is impressive of its own right, and the release, and player support for,The Binding of Isaac Repentance, shows just how intense the love for Edmund McMillen’s seminal work is. While players mayreturn to findThe Binding of Isaac Repentanceis a much-changed title,currently overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews suggest it’s worth the leap.
The expansion pack is, according to The Binding of Isaac: Repentance’s Steam page, “better than a sequel” owing to the large amount of content found within the pack- giving even the most completionist players of the cartoon-esque horror game a new sandbox to experiment new builds in.New characters can be unlocked through esoteric quests, as well as new items that can completely change how the game plays- for better or worse, depending on the synergies from your other items play with each other.
WhileRepentancehas released on PC, there will be longer wait for a console release. Theexpansion had already suffered a delay which pushed back the PC release to March, which was partially accredited to the fact thatRepentancewill beThe Binding of Isaac’s final piece of additional content. According to the game’s creator Edmund McMillen, this meantRepentancerequired more care to ensure the last hurrah of the celebrated title was “perfect”- though as with many other delayed titles, the pandemic played a role in the delay as well.
