Over the years, theCall of Dutyfranchise has seen a lot of game modes come and go. While beloved modes like One in the Chamber, Gun Game, and Search and Destroy have all stood the test of time, being brought back again and again, others aren’t too lucky. Thankfully, Gunfight belongs to the former group, and the fan-favorite mode is set to make a return inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s third Season. But Gunfight shouldn’t just return on its own, it should be accompanied by the intenseGunfight Tournaments mode.
First introduced inCall of Duty Black Ops: Cold WarSeason 2 Reloaded, Gunfight Tournament took the general gameplay formula of the beloved mode and gave it a competitive twist, pitting multiple teams of players against one another to see who’s truly the best of the best. With Gunfight finally returning toModern Warfare 2in a few weeks' time, it would be great to see the return of Gunfight Tournaments as well, even if it’s just a limited-time event.

Modern Warfare 2 Should Bring Back Gunfight Tournaments
After months of waiting and desperately pleading, Infinity Ward has officially confirmed that Gunfight is coming back toCall of DutywithModern Warfare 2’s Season 3 update, set to drop around June 07, 2025. For those unaware, Gunfight is a mode that originally debuted in 2019’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare. This mode sees small teams of just one, two, or three players go head-to-head in tiny arenas. Loadouts are often randomized at the start of a round, but each player is given the same one to make the fight completely fair. In many ways, Gunfight offers the peak ofCall of Dutygameplay, being a true test of skill, teamwork, and communication.
Gunfight then returned inCall of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, where it received several different iterations. Gunfight OSP saw players start with no weapons, and have to scavenge them quickly from across the map.Gunfight Snipers-Only and Gunfight Melee-Onlyadded even more skill-based challenge to the mode. And seasonal iterations like Snowfight and Gunfright gave the mode a more casual, lighthearted feel.
It’s currently unclear just what variants of Gunfight will make it over toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but it seems like a safe bet to assume that it’ll have the three standard 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 modes at launch. But while these modes are more than enough to please the vast majority of fans, it would be a real missed opportunity if Infinity Ward didn’t also add Gunfight Tournaments to the roster.
As mentioned up top, Gunfight Tournaments was a limited-time game mode introduced inCall of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. This mode took the same 2v2 gameplay of Gunfight and gave it a more competitive, long-form structure. In Gunfight Tournament, 16 teams of two go head-to-head. Each match sees teams try to win six rounds, with every two rounds swapping players' loadouts. If a team loses the match, then they’re eliminated from the tournament completely. It’s a simple variation of the belovedGunfight game mode, but it’s also a compelling one that really tests a player’s mettle on the field. Gunfight Tournament also offered a slew of exclusive rewards for those who got far in the mode, including weapon charms, emblems, calling cards, and a weapon blueprint for the team that finishes in the top spot. WhileCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has just received ranked play, there’s always room for more competitive game modes.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
