Modern Warfare’s next season begins today, and with it has come a new operator in the form ofModern Warfare 2’s Ghost, new maps and multiplayer modes, and a new battle pass to grind out. For starters, something has been added to the main menu. What that something is is currently a mystery, as it’s marked as “classified,” but it suggests something big. But what really has fans thinking it’ll be as big asModern Warfare’s oft-leaked battle royale modeis the new cinematic that was also added today, which comes with less-than-subtle hints.
The cinematic in question shows a squad of soldiers making their way through a devastated airport, before pulling back to reveal what appear to be multiple shootouts taking place across the surrounding area. Multiple staples of battle royale games likePUBG,Fortnite, andCall of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Blackout modecan be seen, the most notable being the sight of soldiers dropping onto the map from a passing plane. Mention is also made of “gas closing in,” which is presumably whatModern Warfare’s version of the shrinking battle royale circle is going to be called.
There have been quite a fewleaks and rumors aboutModern Warfare’s battle royale mode, and if even half of them are legit, the mode could prove to be a major contender in the genre. Word around the internet in the last few months have claimed that the battle royale mode will take place on a map three times larger than Black Ops 4’s Blackout map and support matches with 200 players. Not only that, the mode will be available both in-game and as a free-to-play standalone for those who don’t ownModern Warfare.
So far, Infinity Ward has yet to officially acknowledge the existence of a battle royale mode outside of the new cinematic, so it remains to be seen how much of this, if any, will be coming toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare. From the look of things, though, players won’t have to wait long to find out.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
