Award-winning television director Johan Renck will helm two episodes of theHBO Maxprequel seriesDune: The Sisterhood. Renck is best known for his work on HBO’s critically acclaimed miniseriesChernobyl,which earned Renck an Emmy for Outstanding Director For A Limited Series.
Written and created by Craig Mazin,Chernobyl was nominated for nineteen Emmy Awards and won for Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing. Renck is also known for directing the pilot episodes ofVikingsandBloodline,and he has also directed episodes ofBreaking BadandThe Walking Dead. He is also credited with directing David Bowie’s final two music videos. Renck is currently wrapping production on the sci-fi feature filmSpaceman,which stars Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, andThe Batmanactor Paul Dano.

Based onFrank Herbert’s classic novel,Dune: The Sisterhoodis set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides. The story follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit. The series will premiere on HBO Max and serve as a prequel to director Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 filmDuneand the upcoming sequelDune: Part Two.Villeneuve was originally set to direct the pilot, which will now be helmed by Renck, along with the second episode of the series.
Dune: The Sisterhoodwill be written by Diane Ademu-John, who also serves as showrunner on the series. Ademu-John is known for her work on Netflix’s seriesThe Haunting Of Bly Manorand the hip-hop dramaEmpire.She will also serve as an executive producer alongside Renck, Villeneuve, andscreenwriter Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote the script forDune: Part One.
Spaihts, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work onDune, is also known for writing the scripts forMarvel Studios’Doctor Strangeand the science fiction filmsPrometheusandPassengers.He was initially slated to write the prequel series but was replaced by Ademu-John last year. Spaihts is currently working on the script forDune: Part Two, which is expected to be released on July 02, 2025.
