Civilization 6allows players to use a variety of siege weapons as support units to conquer rival cities and civilizations, but it doesn’t do a great job of making it clear how to use these units. Players often find themselves confused onhow to use the battering ramor the siege tower because the way they both work is somewhat counterintuitive.

One might think that these siege weapons would simply make attacks against the enemy wall or help transport troops, butCivilization 6takes a different approach. The short of it is that players need simply have a siege tower next to a walled city to get its full effects for all units.

This is the same principle as the battering ram as well, although the two function differently in one key way. Battering rams help players destroy walls while siege towers allow them to bypass walls entirely, dealing damage directly to a city.

To build and make use of a siege tower, players must first get to the classical era and research the construction technology, which will allow the player to create siege towers. After making one, players need simply park the siege tower next to an enemy city to provide the bonus to all allied forces attacking that city. The siege tower allows players to completely ignore walls, making it much more effective than the previous era’s battering ram, but it must still be protected lest the enemy target it. These can make it much easier towin wars in the early game ofCiv 6.

Having multiple siege towers will not providebonus damage to cities, as the one is enough to remove any penalties that units had. It is worth noting that siege towers are only effective with melee and anti-cavalry class units, meaning certain units such as knights won’t gain any benefits. Additionally, the siege tower stops working once the opponent has researched Renaissance walls or Urban Defenses, at which point the player should upgrade their siege towers into medics.

The siege tower can certainlyturn the tide of battle, as removing the benefit of walls is an extremely crippling effect, but players will need to know when and how to use them to make the best of the tech. So long as players remember that siege towers only work for infantry and anti-cavalry units, don’t work on Renaissance walls or Urban Defenses, and only require one to be adjacent to a city to provide benefits, they should do well.
