David Ayer shares another never before seen image of Jared Leto’s Joker fromSuicide Squad, and offers hope among fans campaigning for his cut of the film. This is not so different from when Zack Snyder would tease images in the build up toZack Snyder’s Justice Leaguebefore the public knew of its release, so it could be that history is repeating itself with more beneath the surface to unpack.Joker is once again in the spotlight, as this would not be the first time that Ayer has sharednever before seen images of Leto’s Joker. Ayer has stated that the true performance of Leto was ripped from the film with re-writes, re-shoots and re-editing in a secret second edit of the film according to reports, in hopes that the studio could capitalize on theDeadpoolformula. However, Ayer’sSuicide Squadcould actually see the light of day if the director’s words of encouragement mean anything.RELATED:Jared Leto Continues To Push For The Ayer Cut Of Suicide SquadAyer showed off an image of Leto’s Joker on his Instagram story, and the director came out with information that addresses what the future may bring. Ayer states that he and James Gunn had spoken “a while ago,” and “with patience,” Gunn “has the right to put together his new universe before visiting the past. Cheer up. Good things are coming ;).” Previously, Gunn said he was open to Ayer’sSuicide Squad, but the conversation that Ayer speaks of had to be after Gunn gained control of DC Studios, possibly whenGunn acknowledged the release the Ayer cut campaignsince his DCU was specifically referenced by Ayer.
What can be gathered is thatAyer believes hisSuicide Squadwill releaseafter speaking with Gunn. This comes just hours after the DC Studios CEO assured fans that he has “never once lied” to them, “and never will,” but follows this up by saying it doesn’t mean he can’t change his mind. Even so, Ayer is optimistic. Although, there are those in the fan-base that think the director could be more aggressive in his negotiations with DC Studios and WBD, using Zack Snyder for comparison.
Even though leasing DC IP to a streaming service like Netflix, which WBD and DC Studios state is a part of their business strategy, would bring good-will from fans and lessen controversy around Gunn’s upcoming DCU for having rebooted the franchise, it would still make sense that Gunn may prefer to release it himself with DC Studios. This could be the case since the DCU slate is supposedly a factor, according to Ayer. Otherwise, there’s no reason it couldn’t be leased right now, similar toDead Boy Detectives. Ayer’sSuicide Squadis the last of the DCEU Snyderverse films yet to see the light of day that were wronged by the previous WB regime, so releasing it could satisfy those fans while also standing toe-to-toe with the last of the DCEU films to release this year, which will wrap up that franchise beforeGunn’s new DCU slateis expected for 2025.
