When a cast of characters meets an unknown evil aboard a space station in which there is no way out, death is inevitable.Dead Spaceintroduces audiences to a few interesting characters that find themselves on the USG Ishimura, and theDead Spaceremake further fleshes out these characters, making their deaths impactful during the story.

The 2023 remake ofDead Spacemakes it clear from the start that anyone can die, and not even the protagonist, Isaac Clarke is safe. As players progress throughDead Space, they will witness the deaths of characters in brutal fashion, while desperately clinging to life themselves.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead
9Terrence Kyne
Terrence Kyne makes a few appearances throughout theDead Spaceremake. Despite being a Unitologist, Kyne was completely against the purpose of the Marker and decided for himself that it could not return to Earth, and instead, must be put back where it came from on Aegis 7.
Kyne was only trying to help Isaac Clarke put things right, but his journey ended after being shot in the chest by Kendra Daniels. In his last moments, Kyne reached out to Amelia, his late wife, showing the impact the Marker had on his mental health.
8Challus Mercer
The main antagonist ofDead Space, other than the countless andgruesome Necromorphs, was Challus Mercer. Mercer actively encouraged the Necromorphs and the entirety of the Convergence of humanity’s next step. Mercer was a fanatic, obsessed with Unitlogy and the Necromorphs, which, ultimately, was his undoing.
After his Necromorph experiment, The Hunter, was incinerated by Isaac Clarke, Mercer begged the Marker to begin Convergence. However, Mercer was rejected by the Marker and was crushed and killed by the tentacle of the Leviathan.
7Nicole Brennan
Part of Isaac Clarke’s ambitions for repairing the USG Ishimura in the first place was to meet with his girlfriend, Nicole Brennan, a successful doctor who took the role of Senior Medical Officer aboard the USG Ishimura. ThroughoutDead Space,Isaac and Nicoleconstantly miss each other, or run into each other just out of reach, with Nicole constantly mentioning ways to “make us whole again.”
At first, it may come across as a little strange, until all is revealed in theDead Spaceending. It turns out, Nicole has been dead this entire time and committed suicide to avoid the Necromorph invasion. All Isaac Clarke saw was an illusion, which is made more clear when the first letter of all 12 chapters spells out: “N.I.C.O.L.E. I.S. D.E.A.D.”
6Hailey Johnston
As part of the CEC Security Team onboard the USG Kellion, Corporal Hailey Johnston had quite a career as a pilot. She was ordered to stay onboard the Kellion while the other members of the crew investigated the strange disappearance of the USG Ishimura’s crew. However, as Isaac Clarke returned to the Kellion to talk to Johnston, he was met with her death and the destruction of their ship.

Since comms were down, Johnston was unaware of the Necromorphs and was completely in the dark when it came to the Necromorphs onboard the Kellion. She was stabbed and then blown up once the singularity core was destroyed, causing her and the ship to explode.
5Aiden Chen
Aiden Chen was a loyal friend and member of Zach Hammond’s security team. Aiden Chen, Hailey Johnston, and Zach Hammond all worked together as longtime colleagues until their final mission as a unit onboard the USG Ishimura. Corporal Aiden Chen was no match for a threat that he didn’t know how to kill, or how they moved, and the lack ofan engineer RIG suitdid not help.
Chen is the first person to die inDead Space, and Isaac Clarke watches in horror from behind the safety of the glass. A Necromorph drops from the vents, and stabs Chen, killing him instantly. However, Chen is later resurrected into a Necromorph due to the Marker, a Necromorph that is killed again.
4Elizabeth Cross
The remake forDead Spaceharbors a different fate for Elizabeth Cross. In the original, she is already dead by the time Isaac Clarke finds her. The remake has Elizabeth Cross in a more important role, as she assists Isaac in jettisoning the Leviathan out into space after curing the air of toxins. Cross later returns in a plot twist for the final chapter.
It turns out, theMarker had been using Crossas a manifestation of what Isaac wanted to see, and who Isaac thought was Nicole, was Elizabeth Cross. Stricken with grief that her boyfriend Jacob Temple was not Isaac Clarke, she gave up and urged Kendra Daniels to shoot her dead, which she obliged with no hesitation.
3Jacob Temple
The boyfriend to Elizabeth Cross, and a surviving Acting Chief Engineer aboard the USG Ishimura, Jacob Temple went searching for his girlfriend, Elizabeth Cross, until he was tricked into assisting Challus Mercer, a fatal mistake indeed.

Once Mercer had obtained his usefulness from Jacob Temple, he used stasis to freeze Jacob in place. Here, Challus shot him in the head, ensuring a prolonged death considering it was in slow-motion. It’s the tragic death of a character that just wanted to do the right thing.
2Zach Hammond
The Chief Security Officer of the USG Kellion had seen nothing quite like what had happened on the USG Ishimura. Zach Hammond was headstrong and realized despite the odds and the horrors on the Ishimura, there was a job to do, and he went on his way to do it. Sadly, his unfamiliarity with the Marker’s hallucinations, and his close bonds to his fallen teammates were his undoing.
Once on board the USM Valor, Zach Hammond encountered hisold friend Chen, who was killed at the beginning ofDead Space. The Marker makes Hammond believe that Chen isn’t a Slasher Necromorph, and so he is stabbed. However, in a heroic last effort, Hammond pushes himself and Chen into the USM Valor’s singularity core, killing them both, but bringing down the containment field that prevented Isaac Clarke from obtaining the singularity core.
1Kendra Daniels
In one way or another, the crew of the USG Kellion all seem to know each other. Hammond did an extensive background check on Isaac Clarke and Kendra Daniels. However, Daniels’ file seemed barren. This was shrugged over, especially since the Necromorph invasion was rather distracting. However, there was a reason Kendra’s files werenot what they seemed.
Kendra Daniels was working secretly as an agent for EarthGov, where she was tasked with returning the Marker 3A. Kendra betrays Isaac Clarke when they are so close to going home. Her death comes at the hands of the Hive Mind, in which she is crushed to death under its might. Despite her betrayal, Isaac still tried to save her in the end.
