Someone is working on a new mod for the originalDoom, in which the armored space marine known as Doomguy will be replaced by Hank Hill from the classic animated sitcomKing of the Hill. Given that id software’s 1993 release is easilyone of the most influential FPS games in history, helping to shape the genre almost 30 years ago, it’s perhaps not too surprising that the iconic shooter is still finding its way into the limelight. Much of that can be attributed to the ongoing modding community.
Anyone who’s ever played the original releases knows there are analmost endless array of mods forDoom. There are even those that completely convert it into a different experience entirely, pretty much changing it into a brand-new game distant from the source material. After almost three decades, many would be forgiven for thinking that just about every modification idea has been implemented, but it seems pretty clear even at this stage that there are still a lot of creative types willing to share theirDoom-like projects.

As spotted by PCGamer, a user who goes by FreewayHere is in the midst of making their own mod forDoomthat will feature Hank Hill as the main protagonist. While screenshots suggest the gameplay will still be the same as the classic release, there are a number of changes that have been made which put it in line with the Mike Judge show. For instance, as well as replacing the Doomguy’s face with Hank’s own pixelated version, it also looks as though there will be a lawn mower and BBQ grill added, perhaps as weapons the player can choose. The creator is also swapping out the visuals of barrels and replacing them with propane tanks, as well as creating their own levels. Currently, there is no release date for the mod.
King of the Hillis one of the most beloved animated showsof a previous generation. Running for over 12 years, the show ended in 2009, though not before winning two Emmys, and was voted one of the best TV shows of all time byTimemagazine. It seems odd that the otherwise patriotic and soft-spoken Hank would take on a horde of demons, but it will be interesting to see the finished project.
Withid software allegedly working on a new game, there’s a chanceDoomcould once again be the focus of the gaming industry, although it’s not clear what project the studio has in mind just yet. With so many mods still coming out after all these years, it really hammers home just how important the original 1993 release was not only for the first-person shooter genre, but for video games in general.
Doomreleased in December 1993 for multiple platforms and has been ported to many systems.
