Locke & Keyis nearing its end. The series, based on the comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, will end with its upcoming third season, a decision that co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill made conjointly with Netflix.
TheNetflixshow follows a widow named Nina Locke who, after the murder of her husband Randall at the hands of one of his former students, relocates from Seattle to Massachusetts with her three children. The family then takes residence at Key House, the childhood home of Nina’s late husband, an enigmatic manor filled with locked doors and magical keys that are strangely related to Randall’s death.

Per Deadline, endingLocke & Keyafter season 3had always been the goal for Cuse and Averill, as they envisioned a three-season arc for the series since the beginning. “Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Key House adventures to a satisfying conclusion,” the pair said in a statement. “As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.”
Locke & Keypremiered in February 2020 after spending nearly ten years in developmental hell. It was initially going to be adapted into a movie, though that idea never came to fruition. Hulu ordered a series pilot in 2018, but ultimately passed and declined to request more episodes. Eventually, Netflix acquired the rights andLocke & Keyofficially began development.
Shortly after it premiered, Netflix announced that it had been picked up for a second season, which debuted in October 2021. The show received positive reviews and soon gained a loyal fanbase, so it came as no surprise that the streamer gave season 3 the green light, even before the release ofLocke & Keyseason 2.
The forthcoming third installment is currently in post-production and is slated for release later in the year, though it remains unclear exactly when. Nevertheless, fans are excited to see the return of stars Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, and Brendan Hines. Season 3 will also feature Sherri Saum, Kevin Durand, and Coby Bird reprising their roles as Ellie Whedon, Frederick Gideon, and Rufus Whedon, respectively.
