The world of Athia appears to be a hostile realm inForspoken, with most of the people and creatures preferring to fight Frey before ever looking to talk or try any type of diplomacy. As a result, it looks likeFrey’s adventure through Athiacould be a lonely trek in an unfamiliar land, with only the magical Cuff to talk to for the majority of the game.

However, there are a few opportunities for Frey to find some companionship inForspoken, specifically with the familiars that can be found throughout the world. One of these familiars, Saglan, can actually be found in the current demo, and can be visited every time the player takes a rest in the Pilgrim’s Refuge.

Finding Saglan at the Familiar Monument in Forspoken

In order to find Saglan in the current build of theForspokendemo on PS5, players need to head off the beaten path early to find the Familiar Monument at the edge of a cliff. From there, the game asks Frey to complete a simple jumping puzzle and to approach Saglan without scaring the familiar away. The reward for all of this trouble is an adorable little scene where Frey gets to pet the unicorn cat before it magically disappears off into the distance and will reappear the next time the player visits a Pilgrim’s Refuge.

From here, this seems to be where interacting with the Familiar Monuments seems to end, as the familiars themselves do little more than hang around in the Pilgrim’s Refuge. Sometimes the player can pet Saglan, and taking a rest while the familiar is in the room can even result in a unique sleeping animation where the unicorn cat curls up next to Frey. However, this specific piece ofForspokenside contentappears to mostly be cosmetic and doesn’t do much to change the gameplay experience outside of these safe zones.

Forspoken’s Familiars Should Follow Frey into Athia

Having a familiar like Saglan appear in the Pilgrim’s Refuge can be comforting for some players, but that doesn’t say much for while Frey is traveling around Athia. However, if Luminous Productions wants to make the reward of seeking out Familiar Monuments stand out more, then including the familiar as a traveling companion could add a necessary incentive. This doesn’t even have to affectForspoken’s combat and magic abilities, instead leaving the familiar companion as a friendly face who zooms across the landscape alongside Frey.

Of course, while having a familiar like Saglan hanging around at all times would be enough of a reward, the lore of these characters themselves could imply that they could assist in combat in some ways. Given that the familiars are related toForspoken’s antagonistic Tantas, they are connected to an incredible amount of magical prowess. So, it wouldn’t be out of the question that the blessing of a creature like Saglan might give Frey some sort of passive buff, or allow the familiars to periodically damage some enemies.

One interesting option for improving the familiars could be to turn them into a type of summon, which could appear at specific times during fights similar to the Astrals that appeared inFinal Fantasy 15. It would certainly be an impressive twist for such small creatures to suddenly appear and wipe out an entire group of enemies with considerably more ease than Frey would normally be able to. This could also go to show theraw power of the Tantas inForsakenas well, with their mere familiars being powerful enough to clear a battlefield in a second. Regardless of their strength in combat, however, just having familiars like Saglan running around the world with Frey would be a great reward for a lot of players who just want to have a little unicorn cat companion while out and about.
