Nostalgia can be a powerful sensation in gaming, especially when a franchise can foster the kind of loyal fanbase theGod of Warseries has, and one player got a massive hit of it after uncovering an original PlayStation 2 copy ofGod of War 2in their attic. The series' fingerprints are all over Sony’s family of PlayStation consoles, starting from the PS2 all the way up to the PS5 and even Sony’s two attempts at handheld consoles with the PSP and PSVita. However, from a narrative and design standpoint,God of War 2set the stage for what was to come in the years to follow the series as Kratos goes from Ancient Greece to Nordic Europe.
God of War 2was originally released in March 2007, two years after the original game’s release, and was one of the last major releases on the PS2 before Sony shifted its entire focus onto the then-one-year-old PS3 console. It picks up sometime after the end of the first game and sets Kratos on a collision course with Zeus after being stripped of his godhood as a result of the near-constant wars in Greece. Kratos' journey for revenge sends him to the home of theSisters of Fatewith plans to change his fate and bring Zeus to his knees, leading to the events ofGod of War 3.

The aforementioned original copy was uncovered by Reddit user Skaddl3D while they were cleaning out their attic recently. Skaddl3D shared an image of the game, which sports the box art design reminiscent of the first game’s art of Kratos standing before the Athens with his bloodyBlades of Chaosdrawn. In the case ofGod of War 2, though, he is standing before the entrance to the Island of Creation on his way to confront the Fates.
Skaddl3D’s discovery received a positive response with 97 percent of users upvoting the post and two other users commenting, sharing their love of the game and appreciation of the find. However, Skaddl3D revealed the game wasn’t the only discovery they made while doing some seasonal cleaning in their attic. Skaddl3D said they found theiroriginal PlayStation 2 consolein the attic as well, still in working condition, and was looking for a way to hook it up.
The reverence Skaddl3D shows towardGod of War 2is one reflected by many players for the franchise as a whole, which appears to have only grown due to 2018’sGod of Warand 2022’sGod of War Ragnarok. Both games saw Kratos, who had largely been portrayed as a man driven primarily by rage and vengeance, become more reflective of himself for the sake of his sonAtreuswhile still keeping the epic moments and intense gameplay players had come to expect from the series. The end results were games lauded by both critics and players which, ultimately, could lead to similar nostalgic hits for players years from now similar to Skaddl3D’s feelings forGod of War 2.
God of War 2is available for PlayStation 2.
