Summary

GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldis the upcoming prequel to Spiders' 2019 action RPGGreedFall, currently slated for a summer 2024 early access release. Set three years before the events ofGreedFall,GreedFall 2puts players into the shoes of a Teer Fradee native who has been forced to leave the island and transported to theOld Continent of Gacane. Rather than launching as a full release,GreedFall 2will begin in early access as part of Spiders' vision to involve players in the development process and ensure the prequel is everything they want in the nextGreedFallgame. This means thatGreedFall 2is bound to be a massive improvement over its predecessor, so players should expect plenty of things to be different once it is complete.

There are quite a few features fromGreedFallthatGreedFall 2: The Dying Worldcould improve — namely, its combat, character customization, and companion storylines. It has already been confirmed that Spiders has improvedGreedFall 2’s combat from the first game by allowing players more control over their companions during combat and providing more role-based abilities for each character. However, there is one areaGreedFall 2could still spice up that not much has been revealed about so far. Specifically,GreedFall 2could improve the first game’s exploration by looking to its peers for inspiration and crafting a world worth poring over.

How GreedFall 2 Could Improve the First Game’s Exploration

GreedFall’s Exploration Feels Repetitive and Flat

GreedFallis certainly a beautiful game, especially when played on a PC with decent hardware.Teer Fradeeis a wondrous island full of gorgeous foliage often bathed in hazy beams of sunlight, making it worthwhile for the visuals alone. Unfortunately, any game that encourages exploration needs beauty that is more than skin deep, andGreedFalljust doesn’t have that.

ExploringGreedFall’s island of Teer Fradee can be rewarding at times, as players can find plenty of treasures, unique enemies, and crafting ingredients around many corners. However, this sense of discovery wears off after each new area begins feeling just like the last, only with a different coat of paint on it. Even so,GreedFall 2already has exploration inspiration at its fingertips, thanks to the fact that Spiders has intentionally craftedGreedFallas an ode to the golden age of BioWare.

GreedFall 2 Should Look to Its BioWare Peers for Exploration Inspiration

SinceGreedFallis designed to feel and function like a classic BioWare title,GreedFall 2can shamelessly look to some ofBioWare’s best gamesfor inspiration when it comes to the layout and execution of its explorable world. Based on what has been revealed so far,GreedFall 2’s world is already more visually stunning than the first game’s, it just needs to do right by players who set out to explore it.

BioWaregames likeMass Effect Legendary Editionmight be a good stimulus forGreedFall 2, as it has some of the best exploration of any BioWare title.Mass Effect Legendary Edition’s explorable areas are very linear in design, but there is more than enough variation in their details that they rarely ever feel like the last. Furthermore, there is always a wide variety of special encounters, valuable loot, and worthwhile information players can find off the beaten path inMass Effect Legendary Editionthat they wouldn’t find simply pursuing the main objective.

Dragon Age: Originsis another classic BioWare title that offers worthwhile exploration, as players can find themselves engaging in challenging yet rewarding combat with unique enemies as they explore Thedas.

There is clearly more than enough inspiration for exploration atGreedFall 2’s disposal, especially in the classic BioWare titles it and its predecessor reflect. With enough diversity and plenty of rewarding opportunities around every corner,GreedFall 2’s biggest strengthcould be its exploration, allowing it to succeed where the first game fell short.
