Whenever a celebrity or other public figure says something inappropriate or offensive, it’s not uncommon to see a hashtag on Twitter declaring that the person is “over,” meaning that they are essentially being “canceled” for their actions. Sometimes these hashtags get a little out of hand, as is the case with the currently trending #SonicIsOverParty, which is jokingly trying to “cancel” Sonic the Hedgehog for a bizarre reason.
From what we can gather by going through the SonicIsOverParty hashtag, it seems as though a Sonic role-playing account on Twitter called aShadow the Hedgehogrole-playing account the N word. This started the tongue-in-cheek hashtag to cancel Sonic, because if a real person was involved in this situation, that’s exactly what would happen. The hashtag has taken on a life of its own, though, with people now using it to make up a variety of controversial things that Sonic has supposedly done.
Of course, Sonic is a fictional character, and the person who tweeted the racial slur doesn’t represent theSonic the Hedgehogfranchise in any way, so fans of the franchise shouldn’t have to worry about this causing any real backlash for Sega or the blue hedgehog to deal with.
