The final boss inHigh on Lifeis certainly not a cakewalk. The player has evolved to become an elite bounty hunter that has instilled fear in the entire G3. The only thing left to do is face off with Garmantuous, the G3 leader, to fight for the survival of earth and the human species.

Boss fights inHigh on Lifeare consistently intense. Each fight acts as a sort of testto gauge the player’s ability to seamlessly mesh with the upgrades they’ve gained up to that point. As a final fight, Garmantuous is no exception to this rule. This fight will combine the elements thatHigh on Lifehas taught to the player thus far and force them to push to the limits to outlast this foe.

How to Beat Garmantuous

Garmantuous is abit of a clutter to fight. His move-set generally relies on a variety of widespread projectiles that curve and contort in a wide array of different patterns. Memorizing which pattern is about to be fired is a fool’s errand because Garmantuous generally does not have a distinguishable tell that indicates the variety. Instead, focus on moving in a circle around the edge of the arena. The movement will make it more difficult for his patterns to hit, particularly if the player incorporates the dodge boost.

Lezduit is the obvious choice of weapon for this fight. His blast deals consistent and powerful damage, and his auto-aim feature makes him incredibly necessary to the fight. His meter will run out several times, but this is the perfect opportunity to switch toone of the other Gatliansin order to keep the damage on. Lezduit recharges himself even when he is not equipped, and when he does get back to full, he will cue the player by saying his name. Alternate weapons accordingly and ensure that when Kenny or one of the more companionable Gatlians is equipped that their special move is timed to hit Garmantuous for maximum damage. Sweezy can freeze Garmantuous while Gus and Kenny can hit him with heavy attacks from their trick holes.

For this first phase of the fight, Garmantuous will stay in the air and keep distance from the player. This allows for more time to assess the patterns he fires. As they come closer, they generally contort to reveal an opening that can be passed through to avoid the damage. When he begins to fire what looks to be blue horizontal lines, use the dodge unitto push in close and let them go overhead. Then back up again and repeat the evasive maneuver while keeping him under constant fire.

Once he is down, Kenny will cue the player to insert the bomb into him. Walk up to Garmantuous and interact to begin the cutscene. This is not the end of the fight, however, as Garmantuous arises before the bomb can be detonated. This cutscene features some of thegame’s best jokes and cameosbefore phase two of the fight begins.

The fight’s second phase is a bit different from the first, but it should not be too complicated for the player’s strategic adjustment. Garmantuous is grounded now, and he has added to his attacks a ground-pound move similar to what was experiencedwith the Skrendel Bros fight. Use the jetpack to hover above these attacks and keep some distance to anticipate the projectile blasts. As his health dwindles in this phase, his move-set gets increasingly sporadic and unpredictable. The more distance between him and the player, the more time the projectiles have to contort for an opening. It is very likely that the player will be hit in this phase several times. Continue to use the jetpack to get as much distance as possible and always have Lezduit and company keeping the pressure on.

If the player dies in phase two, they should still be checkpointed to begin that phase again. So do not fear failing here and starting all over. Eventually, Garmantuous will collapse again, and the player will begiven a choice to sacrifice Kenny…or potentially another Gatlian. Congratulations! TheHigh on Lifejourney ends here, but that does not mean there isn’t still more to explore.
