Horizon Forbidden Westbrought it when it came to improving traversal in-game. The shieldwing glider is a handy tool that was heavily featured in the pre-release marketing and Aloy procures it early in the game. Useful for gracefullygliding down high mountains and buildingsas well as an added combat element in the right environment, it can easily become one of the most used items in the game.

A fan posted a video to r/Horizon of their child playingHorizon Forbidden Westand stumbling upon a neat trick that allows Aloy to “fly” much earlier than intended. While running through the desert surrounding the Tenakth settlement of Scalding Spear, the 11-year-old gamer somehow gets the idea to run into a dust devil passing by. Rather than listening to the complaint of Aloy that normally triggers when one is near, the player gets a running start, jumps into the air, and into the whirling dervish.

Surprisingly, the dust devil actually lifts Aloy higher into the air and she is practically flying on the updraft it causes. That hardly can be the intended function of the environmental phenomena, but this is one of those things when developers put handy game functions in the hands ofimaginativeHorizonfans. A dust devil occurs when warm air rises quickly through an area of cooler, low pressure air. Comments under the video also marvel at the wonder of this discovery as one of those things that shouldn’t work but does. One or two fans claim they did similar things, but the majority left reactions that they were surprised at this video.

As unintentionally cool using a dust devil to fly, it’s unfortunately limited and impractical. Using the tornado to “fly” is unpredictable. While trying to focus on staying as close to the vortex as possible, the player can easily drift into the clutches of one of thelarger machines in the region like a Thunderjaw, Slitherfang or worse, a Rockbreaker, and into a fight they’re unprepared for. Also, dust devils are short-lived and even shorter in video game terms as they’re only meant as set dressing and not a tool for flight.

The aeronautically-savvy youngster will soon get their dreams of flight fulfilled as Aloy does get the ability to fly on a machine much later in the game. Given the HUD, they’re far away from that point but when that moment happens, surely this 11 year old kid will soar to new heights and marvel at whatGuerilla Games has made possibleinHorizon Forbidden West.
