Summary
Though it might be hard to believe,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis launching in just two weeks, and Rocksteady is going out of its way to deliver one huge last marketing push. A few months ago, Rocksteady released its firstSuicide Squad Insider episode, a 20-minute breakdown of the title’s general gameplay loop, traversal mechanics, progression systems, and overarching narrative. About a month ago, amid some pretty controversial leaks concerning the game and its story, Rocksteady released another Suicide Squad Insider episode honing in on the game’s humor and characters.
Now, with just two weeks to go, Rocksteady has pretty much done all it can to try and keep fans excited aboutSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s impending release, and that includes a recent Q&A. Hosted onSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s official Discord server, some Rocksteady devs held a brief Q&A, where some of the title’s gameplay and story beats were discussed. This led to one Rocksteady dev detailing an intriguing “Social Squad” mechanic, which could end up being a double-edged sword for the game.
In its recent Discord Q&A, a member of the Rocksteady team by the username of @RS_Axel gave some brief details aboutSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Social Squad mechanic. Essentially, based on their description, the Social Squad mechanic will allow players to import their friends' data while playing offline in solo mode. This means that a player could take on the role of Deadshot and fill the remainder of the Squad with their friends' unique versions of the character, all while their friends are AFK.
When ported over, theseSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueavatars will be using any of their currently equipped gear, including weapons, cosmetics, and any special Talents that they’ve unlocked already. For example, if a friend uses a specific modifier on their weapon that freezes enemies, their offline Social Squad avatar will have that same modifier in another player’s game.
On paper,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Social Squad mechanic is a pretty cool idea and one that could easily be used to great effect ina wealth of looter shootersmoving forward. This Social Squad mechanic not only lets players feel as though they’re playing with their friends even while they’re offline rather than default bots, but it also gives their friends in-game rewards, with their character earning a small percentage of the resources that they would have gained by completing the same missions in person.
However,Suicide Squad’s Social Squad mechanic, at least based on its current description, sounds like a system that some players could easily abuse. When recruiting offline Squad members, players aren’t just restricted to their own friend list, but have access tothe entireSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueplayerbase.
In their original post in the Q&A, @RS_Axel states that players could go to the in-game leaderboards, find the best players in the world, and import their characters. Based solely on this information, it seems as though the Social Squad mechanic could be easily exploited, with players being able to bring over player avatars with all the best gear at any point in the game, even during its first few hours, where they’d presumably seem absurdly overpowered by comparison and get carried.
