In 2008’sDead Space, players can find the Peng treasureas early as Chapter 1: New Arrivals. Nestled between the two entry lanes of the Hangar Bay, Peng can only be acquired by using the Kinesis module Isaac picks up later on in his adventure. Since the original game doesn’t allow for backtracking like in the 2023 remake, the only chance players can grab Peng is during their return to the location in Chapter 11: Alternate Solutions.
The 2023 remake pays homage to Peng’s original location in a subtle way.Chapter 3: Course Correctionis one of the first parts of the remake that takes liberties with the original’s narrative. With Isaac being unable to access the Engineering Deck, Zach Hammond redirects the engineer to go back through the Hangar Bay and through a zero gravity section of the ship that will lead him straight to his goal. And since Isaac is now in possession of a Kinesis module as well as improved zero gravity capabilities, players can easily access Peng’s original location with no problems.
Unfortunately, the Peng treasure in the 2023 remake is not in the Hangar Bay. What players find instead is a text log titled “It’s Mine”. Reading the log reveals that some lucky person bought a priceless treasure and is raving about their new possession. The owner talks about the treasure’s curves and lines before figuring out where to hide it. The treasure mentioned is of course Peng and reading the text log will give players clues as to where it can be found, expanding on thelore surroundingDead Space.
“Right In The Depths Where Everything’s Forgotten”
Funnily enough, Peng can be found during the penultimate chapter of the 2023 remake as well. Chapter 11: Alternate Solutions has players going to the Cargo Bay where they can help loadDead Space’s Red Markeronto the executive shuttle. It is in this location that players will be able to find a locker tucked away behind a few Kinesis boxes. Opening this particular locker marked with an “I want more Peng” sign and multiple Peng stickers will reveal the sought-after Peng treasure.
Picking up the Peng treasure for the first time will immediately unlock the “There’s Always Peng!” achievement but to reap its true rewards, players must sell the item at a Store. Doing so will net them a hefty30,000Dead SpaceCredits, which is the most amount of currency they can get from sellable items. Peng’s legacy lives on in the remake not only because of its presence, but because Motive Studio was thoughtful enough to add an easter egg in its previous location. The big sign, stickers, and proximity to the main story make the treasure easier to find, but it is still worth spending a few seconds to pick up this priceless artifact.
Dead Spaceis available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
