Sony’s June State of Play had more surprises in store than fans were expecting, with a handful of updates on already confirmed games, some Indie reveals, and some big game announcements. One of the biggest reveals of the entire showcase happened within the first minute, whereResident Evil 4 Remakewas finally confirmed with a cinematic trailer. While fans didn’t get to see too much gameplay, the general art direction was shown off in quite some detail, revealing a seemingly darker tone forthe 6th generation classic.
Toward the end of theResident Evil 4 Remakereveal trailer, a title card announced that PlayStation VR2 content would be included in the final product. Right now, this VR content has no official description, or even any hints at what it could involve, but if theHorizon: Call of the Mountaingameplay traileris anything to go by, it has the potential to be truly impressive. Though there are no official details just yet, there are some key context clues that could suggest what type of PSVR2 content is heading toResident Evil 4 Remake.

How Resident Evil 4 Remake Could Implement PlayStation VR2
TheResident Evilfranchise is no stranger to virtual reality. When the original PlayStation VR released all the way back in 2016, one of its best experiences was aVR mode forResident Evil 7. While most other PSVR launch titles were short and basic experiences,Resident Evil 7stood out from the crowd, allowing players to enjoy every second of the full game from within the headset.
Just last year,Resident Evil 4 VRhit the Oculus Quest 2 store. For those with a Quest 2, the entireResident Evil 4experience was available in VR. While the game’s core DNA was largely unchanged from the remastered PS4/Xbox One versions of the game, with the same plot, mission structure, enemies, music, and visuals, the gameplay had been reworked from the ground up to create an innovative VR experience. For those lucky enough to play it, the reviews were great, with many critics agreeing that VR’s inherent immersive qualities added a new layer of terror and fun to the near 20-year-old game.
So, based on the franchise’s track record from the last few years, it makes sense thatResident Evil 4 Remakewould have some form of VR content. Still, it’s unclear what type of content that will turn out to be. One of the most likely outcomes is that this PSVR2 content is an additional game mode that acts secondary to the main campaign, perhaps using the series' Mercenaries mode as groundwork. This PSVR2 exclusive content could offer a horde-like mode where players need to hold out in a variety of locations from the campaign.
Alternatively,Resident Evil 4 Remake’s PSVR2 content could be a tad more ambitious, allowing players to experience the entire campaign in VR, just likeResident Evil 7did. With this being the more ambitious option, it does seem a little unlikely, especially asResident Evil 4 VRonly released last yearand is still exclusive to the Oculus/Meta Quest platform.
That being said, Sony’s State of Play also revealed thatResident Evil Villageis receiving a PSVR2 mode, in which the entire game will be playable in virtual reality. This does suggest that Capcom is willing to go all-out and make an entireResident Evilrelease playable in VR, but it may also mean thatResident Evil 4 Remake’s PSVR2 content doesn’t come until after the game’s release. For now, all fans can do is wait for more info.
Resident Evil 4will launch August 04, 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
