Sony Picturesis developing a sequel to the 1997 slasher filmI Know What You Did Last Summer.Kaytin Robinson will direct the sequel, and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr are in talks to reprise their roles from the first film.
The original film centers on a group of friends who reunite when they are hunted by a hook-wielding killer one-year after a tragic accident in which they supposedly killed a man in a hit-and-run. The first film was a huge hit and spawned two sequels. Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr. starred in the first two installments but not the third. The first film helped launch the careers of Love Hewitt, Prinze Jr., and co-star Ryan Phillipe. Amazon Prime Video also produced a short-livedI Know What You Did Last Summertelevision seriesbased on the franchise, which premiered on the platform in 2021.

Plot details for theI Know What You Did Last Summersequel are being kept under wrap. According toDeadline, Sony is not looking to reboot the franchise but do a “passing of the torch” style sequel where the original cast is brought back, and a new generation is introduced. Paramount Pictures’Screamfranchise received a similar treatment with the 2022 sequel. The fifth film in theScreamfranchise featured several original cast members and introduced several new and younger characters to carry on the series. The success of that film was likely a big selling point for the newI Know What You Did Last Summersequel, especially sinceScream2022 was a box office hit.The next film in theScreamseries is set to be released on March 10th, 2023.
As reported by Deadline, the idea for the new film came from Robinson and screenwriter Leah McKendrick, who are said to have blown away Sony execs with their pitch. Robinson is best known for her ’90s throwback Netflix filmDo Revenge, which focuses on two teenagers who form an unlikely duo to get revenge on their classmates. The film was met with generally positive reviews and was compared favorably to the ’90s thrillerCruel Intentions. The success ofDo Revengewas most likely a big selling point for Robinson to take over theI Know What You Did Last Summerfranchise.
Robinson is also known for her directorial debut,Someone Great. She also worked as a writer onMarvel Studios’Thor: Love and Thunderand the HBO Max original,Unpregnant,andshe served as a consultant on the Disney Plus seriesHawkeye.McKendrick is best known for the vigilante thrillerM.F.A., which she wrote, produced, and starred in. She is also known for her rom-com feature,Voicemail For Isabelle,which has been picked up by Sony and is set to star actress Hailee Steinfeld.
