There are certain aspects of famous characters that people tend to agree shouldn’t change. For instance, Batman should always maintain his “no killing” rule, Lara Croft should always raid tombs, and John Wick should always be really into headshots. Of course, these attributes are never set in stone, and not everyone necessarily agrees with them. So what happens when a classic likeJames Bondhas to maintain consistency while still adjusting to allow inclusivity in modern times?
Well, according to oneJames Bondproducer, it’s definitely possible, if a little unconventional. Barbara Broccoli, thecurrent producer of the James Bond 007 franchise, seems to have a firm grasp on her vision for the character going forward. In a recent interview, she discussed her thoughts on gender inclusivity when it comes toJames Bondand media in general, while also laying out a solid foundation for what she sees in the superspy’s future. Somehow, it’s strictly traditional while offering hints of progressive ideas.

While Broccoli appeared on theGirls On Filmpodcast, host Anna Smith posed the oft-repeated question of whether James Bond could ever be another gender in a future story. The producer answered in no uncertain terms that, while she absolutely strives formore roles for women in Hollywood, she holds on to her conviction that Bond will remain both British and a man. The thing is, that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t any wiggle room.
Smith branched off from the issue into the idea of pronouns, wondering whether the character could ever be nonbinary and go by they/them. As focused as Broccoli was on not changing that particular aspect of the character, she seemed open to some possibilities. “Who knows, I think it’s open, you know? We just have to find the right actor,” she answered, suggesting that there’s always room forsomething new even in such a long-running franchise.
Now, some may instinctively take this to mean that James Bond will definitely become nonbinary and androgynous, changing everything about the character for the sake of “wokeness.” But Broccoli was very particular, saying that she’s simply open to the idea of a nonbinary actor to take on the role in the future. As long as they fit the part, why not give them a shot?
Aside from that, it’s also worth specifying for those undoubtedly confused that someone can identify as both male and nonbinary.Gender is a spectrum, and far more of a social construct than many once assumed. It costs nothing to simply acknowledge people’s identities as they wish to be seen, and if aJames Bondmovie takes part in accepting that, it could really go a long way in advancing the public’s perception of gender. It’s a nice thing to hope for, at any rate.
