TheGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3set must be a fun place to be at, especially for director James Gunn, who not only gets to let his creativity loose in the MCU but is also showered byRick and Mortygifts. Now, as the movie gets closer to wrapping up filming, Gunn finally revealed who was really behind this sophisticated office prank.

For those unaware,Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3began filming in February, and shortly after that happened, Gunn starteddocumenting some rather mysteriousRick and Mortycollectiblesthat were being left for him on set. What followed was a 46-day, or rather a 46-gift journey that saw the director finish theGuardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialthat will premiere this December, all while frantically looking for the culprit behind it all, though it seems like his detective instincts were on point from the start.

Gunn had been smart to rule out practically the film’s entire acting cast from very early on, as their schedules would have made it hard for any of them to be the ones pulling off the prank. However, he did have video assist guy “Porkchop” in his crosshairs. As it turns out, Gunn was right, with Porkchop being the actual perpetrator of a plan conjured up by the VFX team, with Ron Underdahl conceiving it and the whole experiment being bankrolled by VFX supervisor Stef.

The reveal came very close toGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3completingits shooting process. In fact, the schedule marks the end of it sometime in May, with Gunn having received a trifecta of Space Morty just today. The director is an avid Twitter user, who not only communicates with fans constantly but was also more than happy to chronicle hisRick and Mortyscavenger hunt.

Although Gunn has said numerous times thatRick and Mortyis his favorite show, the director made clear that all the toys he got during filming would be sold for charity purposes, with plans to bundle every figurine with a signed authenticity certificate. Being the very vocal figure he tends to be, Gunn recently jumped to defend Chris Pratt over accusations related to his Christian faith, stating that he’d be the first one to leave the franchise if his star were to get cut.

This is definitely a busy week for Marvel Studios, withMoon Knightending its first season andDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesspremiering. Now, fans have more reasons to be excited as Gunn gets ready to announce he’s finishedGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled to premiere exactly six years after the last movie, this timebringing in Adam Warlock’s perfection.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is scheduled for release in theaters on July 31, 2025.
