Summary
Out of all the characters within the world ofJujutsu Kaisen, two of them have been the best of friends before, before turning to reluctant and bitter enemies. However, with the second season ofJujutsu Kaisenhaving released, many fans are eager to learn more about Satoru Gojo, and Suguru Geto’s relationship as well as personality in the past. Something that the second season does very well is showing the different shifts in personality from what we have seen of these two characters in the present compared to the past.
Gojo’s personality in the past and present both have similarities and differences from each other. The same can be said for Suguru Geto, especially with how surprisingly moral he used to be when it came to his ideology of using Cursed Techniques to help non-sorcerers. However, there are multiple instances of this season and the overall arc that proves to be specifically tailored togiving us a good look at their pastand how they drifted apart.

Understanding Their Dynamic
Suguru and Gojo are both powerful special-grade sorcerers, this much is true and is shown throughout the episodes if one pays attention to their abilities well enough. However, what is also shown as a point of contrast is their personalities and ideologies when it comes to the ‘weak’ and the ‘strong’ which mirror each other and then switch after a certain mindset-changing event that they both go through.
Gojo, because of his arrogance and even more rebellious behavior, doesn’t see much point in protecting the weak or non-sorcerers, simplybecause he is the “strongest” in Jujutsu Sorcerynow; Suguru, because of his mischievous but empathetic nature has a tendency to see his sorcery as a means to protect the non-sorcerers in the world. However, many events afterward change them both as people, and depending on who you ask and who you think is in the right, for better or worse.
However, it is clear that they had a dynamic with other sorcerers in the past that we get to see in the future, many of them relevant and to establish a bit of an understanding between Gojo and Suguru’s past. This establishes their past in a way that makes sense, interweaving their connections and setting up tension for the first major arc of season 2. For all intents and purposes, this may feel like Gojo and Suguru’s past doesn’t matter, however, it certainly becomes much more of a sign of times changing when you connect the flashback arc with theJujutsu Kaisen Zeromovie.
Gojo and Satoru’s personality and outlooks shifted greatly since their positions, and they have become enemies by then. However, this doesn’t mean to say that they weren’t friends at some point. Their dynamic reflects this, as being twoSpecial-Grade sorcerers allow them to keep upwith the other and look at each other as some measure of equals despite their ideological differences at the time. So, with all that said and acknowledged behind what happens to those two, just what is the meaning of knowing about their past?
Why This Matters
The root of many individuals usually happens during their formative years, and considering Suguru and Gojo both are being focused on as teenagers in this season’s arc, it is no doubt that their personalities and eventual growth would be laid bare and revealed in this specific period of their lives. Whether for better or worse, Gojo and Satoruboth ended up being reveredand feared in their own ways respectively, which is clearly shown in the future episodes. One thing many must understand is that this entire arc has focused on Gojo and Suguru, partially for us to understand their personality as well as their opposing ideologies, but also as a look into how the Jujutsu society handled great events that slowly changed the course of Jujutsu Sorcery as a society in the future.
Even so,Jujutsu Kaisenhas been a story whose personality through its characters has been more on the dark aspects as well as the more selfish parts of being a human being. Gojo’s arrogance eventually leading to enlightenment and a confidence that outpoured in the future, and Suguru’s empathy turned towards unrelenting cruelty and descent to madness are all parts of the roots of the characters we have come to see and associate so much. It ismost likely this short windowinto their past won’t be for longer, and there doesn’t seem to be any plans for filler episodes either, so we may not be able to see more of the past. However,Jujutsu Kaisenhas provided the fans what many have been looking for anyway, and in this sense it has succeeded majorly and satisfyingly feels complete as a whole. And so, Gojo and Suguru’s past is laid bare for all to see.
