Mortal Kombat 11was released back in 2019 and its DLC run is officially over, meaning many are curious about what developer NetherRealm Studios is working on next. There have been a variety of “rumors,” claiming it was aMarvel fighting gameand some have hoped it would be Injustice 3. Right now, though, it seems the likeliest candidate isMortal Kombat 12.

Back in August, it was reported thatNetherRealm is working onMortal Kombat 12due to uncertainty connected to DC superheroes and issues among AT&T and WB Games. It makes sense, given the context, but now fans might have their most legitimate information yetMortal Kombat 12is in development. Recently, a NetherRealm Studios employee posted and quickly removed an image online that referencesMK12.

Jonathan Andersen is a senior production manager at NRS, and he recently posted a seemingly innocuous photo of his desk covered inMortal KombatandInjusticememorabilia. Eagle-eyed fans were able to look closer at the monitors in the image, with the one on the upper right (seen below) containing a file called “MK12 Mast…,” which is an undeniable shortening for the franchise.

Many believe this is some trolling on behalf of NetherRealm, too. Not only is “MK12 Mast…” seen on the monitor, but there are two other aspects. First, it mentionsReptile who was not playable inMK11. Secondly, and most importantly, there’s an email that appears to be a reference to important information that “our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace of…” and says to “take extra care with this material.”

The situation is almost like when Game Pass is teasing a new game and its social media account posts a censored email that’s not “supposed” to be shared. Given the posting, the irony of the email, and the removal, the idea that this may be staged is certainly viable. It’s also worth remembering that NRS has trolled fans in the past, if usually by Ed Boon. He swore up and down and trolled fans for months overMileena’s inclusion inMK11before she was finally revealed.

Fans should keep in mind, though, that this may not mean too much. On the one hand, one could make an argument that this assumedly-staged event was an intentional tease for a proper reveal coming soon. On the other hand, it is just seemingly a tease, and a game can be teased for months before a proper reveal. It would be great if it was soon, but fans shouldn’t hype it up just because of this. For now, NetherRealm Studios fans will just have to wait and see if anything comes out of this regardingMortal Kombat 12.
