A new clip forThe Batmanhad its world premiere. It’s a tense and enigmatic 50 seconds, where Batman straight up punches Jim Gordon in the face and runs away from the GCPD.
The Batmanscene begins withBatman and Jim Gordon’s private conversation, where the Caped Crusader accuses an officer of working with The Penguin. As soon as the discussion ends, Batman abruptly punches Gordon. Given their working relationship, this is clearly a misdirection for the other officers, as the GCPD has yet to trust this young vigilante.

What follows is a tense chase scene, where Batman runs through the GCPD office and uses a grappling hook to evade gunfire. Batman here is fast, rough, and animalistic, further showing the rage of a Year Two vigilante. Of course, the clip ends mid-sequence, leaving fans all the more anxious to see where this is headed. The clip was introduced on an episode ofJimmy Kimmel Live!, with Robert Pattinson discussing his role inThe Batman.
This is just one of many clips that shows how differentThe Batmanis from other film interpretations. Batman has almost always been shown as an ally to the police, with thefirst Tim Burton moviebeing a rare exception. But here, Gordon is the only cop to give him any trust, and even then he has to keep it silent. The rest of the GCPD sees him as a common criminal, and given Batman’s brutal methods at this time, they’re not wrong.
The film-noire influences also come through in the dialogue. With Batman’s snide remarks like, “Who’s the mustache with the broken nose,” he feels a lot like a 1970s crime thriller protagonist. This follows through with director Matt Reeves' intent for the movie, as he set out to make amore mystery-orientedBatmanfilm. Given how this character debuted inDetective Comics, it’s about time for one of these movies to truly play up that angle.
But this clip also raises a lot of questions. Will the GCPD ever learn to trust Batman? Will Batman ease up on the brutality, and learn what it means to be a proper hero? If the story and character arcs revolve around these themes,The Batmancould end up thegreatest and most compellingBatmanfilm yet.
The Batmanwill release in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
