Back in February, Nintendo announcedNintendo Switch Sports, a successor to theWii Sportsfranchise for a new generation.Nintendo Switch Sportsis set to launch at the end of April, so its release date is coming up quick. Nintendo hasn’t had a ton of time to market the game before its launch, but it has now released a new trailer giving fans an overview of what they can expect fromNintendo Switch Sportsgameplay.
Nintendo Switch Sportstakes place in SPOCCO Square, a multi-sport facility that houses all the different sports players will be able to participate in. At launch,Nintendo Switch Sportsplayers will be able to play badminton, bowling, chambara, soccer, tennis, and volleyball, with some of the sports having special modes to check out as well. For example, soccer inNintendo Switch Sportswill make use of the leg-strap accessory (available throughRing Fit Adventureor physical copies ofNintendo Switch Sports), while bowling will let players bowl on lanes with obstacles to make things a little more interesting.

The originalWii Sportsdid not support online play, andWii Sports Clubon the Wii U’s online play left a lot to be desired. It will be interesting to see ifNintendo Switch Sportsonline multiplayeris more in line with expectations. Along with the standard local multiplayer options,Nintendo Switch Sportswill let players play all the sports online, either with friends or against stranger through matchmaking.
TheNintendo Switch Sportsgameplay overview trailer also touches on the game’s ranking system and character creation. There was a bit of controversy when it was revealed thatNintendo Switch Sportswould have new charactersinstead of the Miis fromWii Sports, but as it turns out, players still have the option to play as their custom Miis if they’d rather do that instead.
The trailer also kept the focus onNintendo Switch Sportssports that will be available at launch, but it should be noted that another sport is coming to the game at some point after release. It has already been confirmed thatNintendo Switch Sportsis adding golfthis fall through a free update.
ANintendo Switch Sportsonline play testoccurred shortly after the reveal, but Nintendo has not indicated that it has any plans to do another one before launch. Considering this, it seems that fans will just have to wait for the game’s release date to roll around next month to get their hands on the game.
