During an interview,NvidiaCEO Jensen Huang stated that the company’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) upscaling technology could add more AI features than it already has in supported PC titles. Among the AI features Huang mentionedNvidiaDLSS could pull off down the line, generating objects and player-like characters of various qualities were among the main points.
Currently, Nvidia’s DLSS technology is used by a growing number of PC titles to provide temporal upscaling by using the AI-powered Tensor Cores included in GeForce RTX graphics cards, such as the RTX 40 series. In short, DLSS can render games at a lower resolution and then use AI-based techniques to output the game at a higher resolution, which results in increased performance. While competitors such as AMD have software-level technologies that any graphics card can use, Nvidia’s DLSS remains proprietary due to the Tensor Core requirement. With AI at the forefront of tech talks,Nvidia passed Appleand Microsoft in June 2024 to become the world’s most valuable tech company.
Though Nvidia’s DLSS technology continues to add features with each iteration, the tech giant may incorporate AI more deeply into supported games. According to a Computex 2024 Q&A sessiontranscribed by More Than Moore, Huang stated that future versions of Nvidia DLSS could use AI to add objects and characters of different qualities to games that support it. Huang used an example of a group of six people, with two being real and the other four being AIs, to visualize what DLSS could do in the coming years. While DLSS can generate pixels and frames to increase performance, Huang saidNvidia’s new G-Assist toolis also part of the company’s greater push into AI technology, despite its origin as an April Fool’s joke.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Says DLSS Will Have More AI Features
However, Huang stopped short of disclosing Nvidia’s upcoming plans in the consumer graphics card market. However, PC gamers may not have to wait too long for news of Nvidia’s future products, asHuang will be a keynote speakerat Denver’s SIGGRAPH 2024 conference. While the tech giant has remained tight-lipped about the rumored RTX 50 series graphics cards, codenamed Blackwell, it remains to be seen if Jensen will acknowledge Nvidia’s upcoming products during his SIGGRAPH address.
With support for upcominggames such asStar Wars OutlawsandFinal Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, Nvidia’s DLSS technology shows no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell how Nvidia’s continued AI integrations will shape the future of PC gaming.
