A Hidden Quest For Animal Lovers
Encountering One of the Three Cats
In the city of Baldur’s Gate, there are lots of cute and adorable cats roaming the city, and there are three cats within the area around Sorcerous Sundries that can begin this secret wholesome quest.
These cats may not exactly say it in their dialogue, but they’re secretly looking for a home to live in, or in Barsik’s case, a place where he can gain a new disciple who will give him free catnip. Speaking to one of these cats can trigger a series of events with a certain character who has happened to find themselves in need of a new animal companion.
The Hidden Quest Ties Into A Side Quest In The Underdark
The potential new owner for these cats is none other than Derryth Bonecloak, a dwarf who previously appeared in Act 1 and owns a shop in Baldur’s Gate called Bonecloak Apothecary. If players have previously ventured to the Underdark in Act 1 and encountered Derryth and her husband Baelen while they’re looking forthe rare Noblestalk Mushroom, then there’s a specific outcome in the quest related to the pair that can trigger this secret quest in Act 3.
To trigger this secret cat quest, Baelen must die, either by being blown up by the dangerous mushroom field he’s found in or by some other means. Derryth won’t be sad about his demise because, as it turns out, Baelen was an abusive husband. However, if players haven’t ventured into the Underdark or haven’t encountered Derryth or Baelen, then they need not despair, as the game will automatically kill off Baelen and the quest will still trigger.
Finding A New Home For The Chosen Feline
When players speak with Derryth back in her shop oppositeSorcerous Sundries inBaldur’s Gate 3, she will express sadness about being alone, despite the fact she was unhappy with her late husband. If players have previously spoken to one of the three cats, then a new dialogue option telling the cat that they know of someone who needs a cat companion will unlock the next time they speak to the feline.
The chosen cat will accept the offer and follow the player back to Derryth’s shop, where she will adopt the cat and rename him Walrus. However, there is one feline that is considered the correct choice, and that is Malta, as he’s also looking for a companion and is very happy about moving in with Derryth, whereas Myshka is looking for his mother and isn’t too fussed about who he lives with, and Barsik just wants to find a new disciple to serve Sharess.
Completing this quest will reward the player with 110 experience points and the sense of doing a good deed for a lonely person, which isn’t bad for a secret quest. There are many morehidden secrets scattered throughoutBaldur’s Gate 3, but not all of them are as wholesome as finding a new companion for Derryth Bonecloak and finding a new home for a cat on the street. It’s these little things that makeBaldur’s Gate 3a game to remember.
