Overwatch 2has announced changes to the ping system. Blizzard is working actively to provide the best experience forOverwatch 2players. But even with the constant tweaks, Blizzard’s shooter community has suffered from problems, and some of these problems have turned into recurring issues.
In one recent case, anOverwatch 2player got a Season 4 banbecause of the “applying update bug,” somethingOverwatch 2players have seen since the game’s launch. Players also complain about incorrect matchmaking or inconsistencies in hero abilities that sometimes cause game-breaking bugs. Now, Blizzard is finally addressing one of these knownOverwatch 2problems and reveals that changes are on the way.

In response to a post on Reddit, Systems Designer Gavin Winter confirmed thatOverwatch 2will get a mid-season update with adjustments to the ping system. WhileOverwatchalready had this feature,Overwatch 2players got more ways to communicatewith the new system, especially helping players who don’t use a microphone. According to Winter,Overwatch 2will now have a setting for “contextual pings.” With this, the player will be able to control whether the player will use pings such as “Need Healing” when aiming at an allied hero. Meanwhile, the default setting for the system will be “off.” A big problem withOverwatch 2’s ping system is how the information is shared, sometimes incorrectly.
Overwatch 2’s pings worried players, fearing the system could “break” the game. Winter admitted that mistakes were made with the communication wheel settings when moving fromOverwatchtoOverwatch 2. The dev also revealed that even though Reddit has many posts on the subject, the proportion of players asking for changes is much smaller than the players who don’t want this feature. Because of this, it took the developers some time to implement the changes. Winter also suggested thatOverwatch 2players change the ping wheel options from the .18 second default to a number like 3, to avoid incorrect pings in matches.
The ping system is a common feature in shooters, found in other titles such asApex LegendsandFortnite. The adjustments announced by Blizzard are good news because, despitedespiteOverwatch 2’scurrent lows, the devs remain attentive to what the game needs. As the revised ping system will be live in Season 4, this is another piece of good news forOverwatch 2players. It means that the wait for the fix of this known issue is getting shorter.
Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
