Overwatch 2players are scrutinizing the new competitive rank icons on Reddit. The design changes for the game’s higher ranks have lost their radiance effect and have slightly changed some coloration to the dismay of its players.
Achieving the highest ranks inOverwatch’s competitive ranks gave players not only bragging rights but a shiny, lustrous emblem that almost seemed to sing when it came up on screen after matches and on the player stat screen. As with much of theOverwatch 2experience, the competitive rank icons have seen a redesign and the new icons have lost their shine and charm.Overwatchfans have gathered on Reddit to shun the new designs.

Posted on r/Overwatch, fans are not thrilled with theredesignedOverwatchcompetitiveicons for the Top 500, Masters, and Platinum ranks. The illustrious sheen has been taken away and has a muted color. The colors have also been changed, more dramatically so for the Top 500 icon. It seems like the design was meant to be a sort of emerald color, but it gives more of a dingy green.
With the competitive Skill Rank (SR) numbers next to these icons, it could be that these icons represent the players’Overwatch 1ranks and the loss of the glimmer and icon changes are meant to signify that these are from the past. With the changes toOverwatch 2’s Competitive Ranked systemdoing away with SR numbers and going with an inter-rank tier system, future icons will return the shine. It seems like fans under this post may be a little too narrow-sighted.
Another post from the same subreddit posted a week before this one showed an infographic of the new competitive icons and an explanation of the new ranked system. The icons are redesigned with a slightly rounded shape or an effect that makes them look rounded and the spotlight effect on the higher ranks has been restored. Other than that, they look exactly like theirOverwatch 1counterparts. A symbol with a similar look to the player icon will house the rank. It will have notches on its border added for every new tier and a number displaying that tier is at the bottom.
There are many reasons thatOverwatchplayers can be angry at Blizzard; the tumultuous rollout ofOverwatch 2and the ongoing, numerous toxic workplace issues at Blizzard just to name a few. But here, it seems that theOverwatchReddit community may have overreacted without seeking additional context. Hopefully, whenOverwatch 2’s launch issues have been resolvedand they can safely go into competitive games, they’ll see the error of their ways, and the icons look fine.
Overwatch 2is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
