ThePokemonfandom is filled with hundreds of unique and powerful pocket monsters, but some have more staying power than others. Mewtwo, one of the very first Legendary Pokemon from the Gen 1 games, has been a fan favorite since the very beginning. Recently, onePokemonfan made two incredible paintings of Mewtwo based on a trading card.
As a Legendary Pokemon, Mewtwo is rather rare in both thePokemonvideo games and thePokemon Trading Card Game. Some Mewtwo trading cardscan go to collectors for incredibly high prices, with at least one being valued at over $400. However, somePokemonfans would rather turnPokemontrading cards into art pieces than keep them in a binder or glass case.

Redditor Kalseru_ recently shared two gorgeous paintings of Mewtwo they made based on one specific Mewtwo trading card. This isn’t the first time aPokemonfan has captured the glory ofMewtwo in fan art, but it may be one of the most spectacular. The artist’s work took the dramatic image of Mewtwo featured on the card, showing the Pokemon whirling in mid-air and surrounded by crackling dark energy, and crafted two possible versions of the full scene.
In the first painting, Mewtwo is shown floating over an idyllic grassy meadow–or rather, the remains of an idyllic grassy meadow. The ground is being cracked into pieces as the Pokemonexercises its tremendous psychic powers. Its tail extends off the left side of the painting while two crescent-shaped slashes of purple energy fill the foreground. In the second painting, the green grass and dotted wildflowers are replaced with thick dark clouds and what seems to be a storm-tossed sea. This painting replaces the slashes of energy with lightning and the curve of Mewtwo’s dark purple tail, which now lashes toward the viewer.
According to Kalseru_, they created both paintings live on stream, with the first beinginspired byDragon Ball Z. The artist stated that they created two separate paintings based on the same card because they had two separate ideas for what could be happening in the scene. In the officialPokemoncard, the art focuses closely on Mewtwo, making it difficult to tell what is going on around the creature. Most of the background is taken up by a blue-green sky and indistinct purple swirls that could be interpreted in multiple ways. Each painting gives the scene a very different feel.
