An artistically talentedPokemon Scarlet and Violetfan is quickly gaining attention online for their creative imagining of a Convergent form for the classic Pokemon Doduo, as well as its evolution, Dodrio. ThePokemonfan community continues to be undisputably the most artistically inclined of just about anything in pop culture, as continues to be proven by the numerous pieces ofPokemon Scarlet and Violetfan art constantly making headlines.
For those who may be unaware, Convergent Pokemon are a new type of species that debuted with the recently-releasedPokemon Scarlet and Violet. The new creatures are based on the real-life phenomenon of Convergent evolution, where two completely unrelated species develop similar characteristics over time due to similar environments. The first example of aConvergent Pokemon was the viral Wiglett, a Water-type version of the classic first-gen Pokemon. With only a couple of Convergent Pokemon inPokemon Scarlet and Violetthus far, fans have taken to coming up with their own.

The impressive Convergent Doduo and Dodrio concepts come from Reddit user u/Bynine, who posted their original artwork to one of the platform’s majorPokemonforums. The fan has created Yoduo and Yodrio, a Fighting-type that fuses elements of the original bird Pokemon withthe simian Pokemon Mankey. Described as Mankey’s “distant cousin,” the artist cleverly utilizes the necks as upheld arms, claiming Yoduo fights in the “crane” style. Yodrio sports three arms, a result of “continuous training,” and bears sharper and longer appendages. Both drawings expertly blend the source Pokemon features together, resulting in a well-designed original concept.
The artwork style is also reminiscent of the Gen 1Pokemonwatercolor drawings, giving it a very authentic feel.Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Convergent Pokemonwere initially thought to be mostly just a recolor and re-typing of pre-established creatures, leading to plenty of confusion among fans prior to release. Convergent Pokemon are not to be confused with Regional forms, which are technically the same species of Pokemon with some variations in appearance and typing.
In addition to fan art of Convergent Pokemon, other fans have been producing artwork based onPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s other new type: Paradox Pokemon. The Paradox Pokemon are essentially an ancient or futuristic incarnation of contemporary Pokemon and are unable to breed or evolve. The new concept has led to plenty of fan art, including onePokemonfan who drew a Paradox version of Torkoal, creating a metalized version of the Pokemon. With more content planned forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, perhaps some fans' ideas will actually come to life.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare available now for the Nintendo Switch.
