However, not allPokemonfans seem interested in bringing their favorite Pokemon to vicious matches. Instead, some Trainers may prefer enjoying the company of Pokemon as pets. Across the franchise’s 700+ Pokemon, just which of them are best suited as real-life pets?
10Trubbish: Save The Environment
Newcomers to the franchise weirded out by the design choices of new Pokemon may point at Trubbish as an example. First appearing in Generation 5Pokemongames,Trubbish quite literally looks like a garbage bag. The lore states that Trubbish was created out of a chemical reaction involving industrial and domestic waste. Wild Trubbish constantly emits toxic fumes that could render anyone who inhales it unconscious for up to 10 days, although it stops releasing them in the presence of friends.
Befriending Trubbish may seem unsanitary at first, but nowhere in Trubbish’s description does it state that it’s made out of actual trash. Considering it doesn’t release fumes in the presence of friends, Trubbish won’t be harmful to their own Trainers. Moreover, their preference for dirty areas can make walking with Trubbish an environmentally friendly endeavor as its trash-based diet can clean the neighborhood. Trubbish preferring dirty areas means players reluctant to have it close by could have a dedicated messy area for Trubbish without offending it or harming it.
9Altaria: Graceful Cottony Love
Fans of the Pokemon franchise who want a loyal and adorable pet in real life should consider Altaria. Known as the Humming Pokemon, this Pokemon first appeared in Generation 3 games as theevolved form of the equally cute Swablu. Their Pokemon evolutionary tree is characterized by their blue skin and cottony feathers that give them a pretty cuddly appearance.
What makes Altaria prime pet material would be its inherent qualities. Not only do they love flying with the clouds and singing with their soprano voice, but their melodic tones have soothing qualities that calm people into a dream-like state. They are also fiercely loyal to their Trainers, often wrapping them in their feathers. Anyone up for a good nap could rely on Altaria for a lullaby and a pillow.
8Tropius: Flying And Free Food
At first glance, the sauropod-like Tropius gives the impression of a dinosaur than a Pokemon. However, its appearance in Generation 3Pokemontitles makes it quite the interesting Grass/Flying-Type addition to a Trainer’s team. Aside from its relatively large body and long neck, Tropius is known for green leaves wrapping around its body that also extend into wings, allowing it and its Trainer to fly.
However, the moreinteresting component of Tropius’s biologyis their ability to photosynthesize. Not only can Tropius produce a lot of sugar, but they also bear their favorite fruits on their necks twice a year. Tropius makes for a decent pet not just for their gentle nature, but their ability to provide food on the fly can also make them practical animal companions.
7Rotom: Portable Tech Support
When it comes to modern-day practicality, a Trainer’s reliance on everyday tech makes Rotom quite the ideal pet. First appearing in Generation 4Pokemongames, Rotom has a characteristic appearance of an orange spear with a circular base and horn-like protrusion on top. They are surrounded by a constant stream of electricity that extends into appendages, making them untouchable due to the dangers of electrocution.

Where Rotom becomes a practical pet is through their helpful nature.Rotoms “transform” and change in formdepending on the appliance or electronics they touch, which they could then use to interact with others. Fans who have a Rotom as a pet could have them help around the household by having them tinker with various electronics. Technicians by trade may also find a Rotom companion quite handy as they can test for errors in electronics.
6Ditto: Pranksters Unite
A running gag across the Pokemon franchise isthe way Ditto loves copying the appearancesof everything around it. It’s this copying power that makes this Pokemon quite the ideal pet. Appearing most of the time as a different-colored blob, Ditto’s most astonishing ability is transformation. It can take on the appearance and abilities of any living creature and physical object, potentially allowing it to be as strong as other Pokemon. Its only caveat is that its “disguises” will always have Ditto’s face.
When combined with Ditto’s prankster attitude, the transformation ability could make for some hilarious pranks involving this Pokemon. Ditto’s abilities could be used primarily for entertainment at the hands of a kind Trainer. After all, there’s never a dull day when players and their Ditto could experiment with various transformations.
5Porygon: Present In Cyberspace
Thought to be the first Pokemon to ever be created by humans,Porygon is a Pokemon comprised mainly of computer code. Since its appearance in Generation 1Pokemongames, Porygon is notable for its polyhedral body with a characteristic beak and long tail. While capable of evolving into rounder forms (Porygon2, Porygon-Z), its angular appearance is the more iconic form of the creature.
Porygon is the ideal Pokemon pet in real life because of its capability of traveling in cyberspace. Players no longer have to worry about accommodations when bringing Porygon to other locations as it can simply travel via their Trainer’s phones or other devices. Moreover, Porygon doesn’t need sustenance, making it low-maintenance.
4Minccino: Clean Is Always Good
Although cute and cuddly like a rodent, Minccino packs a lot of punch behind its cuteness. Marking their first appearance inGeneration 5 games, Minccino is known as the Chinchilla Pokemon with signature gray fur with white tips for its ears and tail.

While other rodent or rat-type Pokemon already exist, Minccino sets itself apart for being quite the clean freak. They are highly attentive to their appearance and prefer grooming themselves and others with their bushy tails. Minccino adores shiny items, likes cleaning them, and loves cleaning their environments more. Having a Minccino means having a pet that is just as responsible towards tidiness as their Trainers, meaning they won’t give players a hard time tidying up.
3Flareon: The Most Huggable Pokemon
Internet fame may have just made Flareon one of the best Pokemon to become a pet in real life. Its initial appearance inGeneration 1Pokemongames positioned Flareon as the Fire-Type evolution of the rather adorable Eevee. However, since the somewhat NSFW copypasta of Vaporeon made the rounds in message boards, Flareon comes to the rescue as perhaps the most wholesome Eeveelution a player could own.
Ever the curious Pokemon, Flareon loves roaming around and naturally heats the air they breathe. However, controlling their core body temperature should enable players to snuggle at just the right warmth to feel comfortable. Unlike other Eeveelutions, the presence of a lot of fur on Flareon’s body makes them all the more huggable, with Moves such as Baby Doll Eyes and Charm capable of improving the mood of their Trainer whatever the circumstance.
2Chikorita: Prime Relaxant
Countering Bulbasaur as the representative Grass-Type Starter inGeneration 2Pokemongames would be Chikorita, characterized by its pale green body topped with a large leaf. Their unimposing appearance is improved further with the possession of a pair of rather big red eyes and their docile disposition.
However, what makes Chikorita the ideal starter Pokemon is their leaves and overall moveset. At its core, Chikorita’s leaf can sense changes in humidity and temperature but may also release a soothing aroma that could calm down even the most aggressive Pokemon. This calming quality extends to their Moves, with even the likes of Aromatherapy potentially being able to cure emotional ailments that affect Chikorita’s Trainer.
1Shuppet: Get Unnecessary Negativity Away
Despite its implied ghastly appearance, the floating Shuppet is quite the adorable Ghost-Type Pokemon. First appearing inGeneration 3Pokemongames, Shuppet is characterized by its gray cloth and a horn-like protrusion from its head, believed to be its power source. What makes Shuppet quite the practical real-life pet is its ability to absorb negative emotions.
Considered its food source, negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, malice, and resentment become the best forms of nutrition for a Shuppet. Owning a Shuppet would make it an ideal therapy pet, especially since its capability to absorb negative emotions can give people more room to process events without the potentiality of harming themselves or others.
