Tetris 99’s popularityhas been maintained thanks to the various Maximus Cup events that run every few months, which give players the chance to earn cosmetic rewards and themed backgrounds that are based on other popular Nintendo Switch games, such as theSuper Mario RPGremake,Super Mario Bros. Wonder, andXenoblade Chronicles 3, just to name a few. Despite that, the game hasn’t had many big updates, aside from the new modes added in version 2.1.0, which was during its 2019 launch year.

This new update forTetris 99upgrades the game’s version from 2.3.0 to 2.4.0. For reference, the lastTetris 99update was released in April 2022, which similarly was light on details about what was updated, stating that “several issues” were addressed to improve the game. Ever since the release ofTetris 99, Nintendo has dabbled in other online battle royale-style games based on other classic games.Nintendo released anF-Zerobattle royale last September, which had a similar premise of pitting 99 players against each other as they all tried to race on one track. Despite how popular these games are, some of them don’t have the longest shelf life, such as thePac-Man 99game being delisted in October, three years after launch. Despite that,Tetris 99seems like it’s still going strong despite the lack of big updates outside the regular cosmetic content it receives every few months.
