After more than a quarter of a century, it’s good to see thatResident Evilhas been back on form after the highly praised 2017 entry that brought it back to its roots. Asone of the most influential horror series of all time, Capcom’s IP has managed to survive through a difficult middle period and come out on top. That said, some of the more recent installments have been given upgrades for current-gen systems, and it seems as though they are causing a few issues for some.
In a report from PCGamesN, some fans over on Reddit have noticed a few differences in theResident Evilexperience after the2,3, and7updates started rolling out. For one thing, it looks as though the PC hardware requirements have been retroactively increased, with Steam now allegedly making it so that the games are no longer compatible on anything older than Windows 10. It also looks as though the recent upgrade is causing problems for a number of modifications, including the VR mod. Additionally, gamers are no longer allowed to roll back to a previous update once these new patches have been installed.

Thenext gen updates forResident Evil2,3, &7upgrades went live suddenly, which was unexpected for those who have been waiting to play the games on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. One of the main changes that this current-gen update brings is the implementation of ray tracing for improved lighting and reflection. The PS5 port also comes with 3D audio and DuelSense support. The updates are available for free to anyone who already has the games from the previous console generation. Hopefully, a further patch will be sent out, which will rectify the issues that players have been registering, especially if mods are being broken.
Alongside that, fans have been treated to briefgameplay footage from the upcoming remake ofResident Evil 4. The clip was shown at the recent Capcom Showcase, and reiterates the idea that the remake will aim to retain what made the original version from 2005 so beloved, while also bringing a much darker tone to the game.
Given thathorror games dominated Summer Game Fest this year, now is a great time to be a fan of digital scares. With games likeThe Callisto Protocol,Scorn, andLayers of Fearson their way, it seems the genre is in something of a golden age, and the remake ofRE4will be yet another addition, especially given that fans have been hoping for this reimagining for some time.
