When given the option to delayStar Wars Jedi: Survivora second time, the developers at Respawn Entertainment decided it didn’t need one. The game, which came out at the end of April 2023, was originally slated for a March 17 release. However, in January, it was announced thatStar Wars Jedi: Survivorwould be delayed by six weeks. The reason given was that development was in the final stages, but the team needed additional time to add some polish and iron out performance and stability issues.

Unfortunately, some people are questioning why the game was released on April 28 when, for many gamers,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorhas been riddled with serious problems, not just centered around performance but even just installing a legitimately purchased copy on PC. This led to the game receiving a torrent of negative user reviews on Steam and Metacritic, which stand in notable contrast to the generally positive feedback it got from critics.

However, despite having the option to delay the game’s release one more time, the team at Respawn decided against it. During an IGN interview in March,Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorGame Director Stig Asmussen said that the team felt confident it could finish the game with the original six-week delay. It’s also worth noting that one of Respawn’s driving factors for launching on April 28 were the other titles coming out around the same time, and that may have taken precedence over whether the game was in a fit state to be released. The relevant portion of the interview begins at timestamp 6:27.

Many gamers are feeling particularly unforgiving towards the studio for the launch condition ofStar Wars Jedi: SurvivorbecauseRespawn also decided against delayingStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and that game experienced very similar technical and performance issues when it came out in 2019. However,Fallen Orderwas ultimately a great success for Respawn and EA, earning numerous awards and boasting sales numbers to match, which is why it received a sequel only three years later.

In the same vein, in contrast to the negative player feedback it has been receiving,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorhas proven to be more popular thanFallen Order, with higher concurrent player numbers on Steam and more peak viewers on Twitch. And though sales figures haven’t yet matched its predecessor, it’s expected thatSurvivorwill ultimately surpass the numbers achieved byFallen Order. In the meantime, Respawn has actively been working to address the issues players are experiencing and has already released updates for all platforms, with more on the way.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivoris currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
