A deleted scene fromThe Boysseason 3 revealed that there could be more plotlines for their next season than initially anticipated, specifically surrounding Billy Butcher’s terminal illness.
The Boysseason 3 had a bittersweet ending. While the supe exterminators managed toevade disaster by subduing Soldier Boy(for now), Butcher’s prolonged use of Temp V resulted in him having only months to live. A recently released deleted scene revealed that the others don’t know about Butcher’s terminal diagnosis because he chose not to tell them. Worse yet, he even goes out of his way to lie about it.

GamesRadarrevealed the contents of the aforementioned deleted scene. “In a new deleted scene from the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the show, we learn that Hughie (Jack Quaid) has luckily been saved from the same fate. Set directly after getting the news from the doctor, Butcher tells the ominous medical professional to ‘kindly f*** off’ before Hughie visits.” They then revealed the dialogue between the two. “‘They said it will be a couple of months, a lot of migraines, but I’m mostly all good,’ he tells Butcher. ‘We stopped taking the V just in time, I guess. Have they told you?'” Interestingly, Butcher then lies to Hughie, replying, “‘Yeah, yeah same here. Aren’t we a couple of lucky f***ers, aye?'”
ThroughThe Boysseason 3, Butcher and Hughie had seen and been warned of the dangers of Temp V. Though Butcher is hellbenton snuffing out Homelanderby any means possible, he still has a strong enough conscience to prevent Hughie from potentially risking his life by taking the lethal number of doses that will kill him. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop Butcher’s desire for revenge from getting the better of him. Now that he’s on borrowed time, all eyes will be on Butcher as to whether he will die from using the toxic substance and whether he’ll succeed in bringing down Homelander and Vought once and for all before he dies.
This could also have massive implicationsfor whereThe Boysseason 4 goes. Butcher may fit the profile as the jerk with a heart of gold, but that personality type also makes it likely that he will not open up about his fatal diagnosis to others because he can’t. Between his sadistically abusive childhood, losing his wife, and now losing his surrogate son, Butcher may close himself off even more, which could be harder to hide as time goes on since he’s dying.
Knowing where The Boys season 3 ended things, that’s just one of the many intriguing plotlines going into season 4. On top of what’s been established in the past three seasons, likeexposing Vought for the corrupt businessthat it is, now Homelander’s more sadistic side has been welcomed by the public, supes are trying to infiltrate the U.S. political system, and Homelanders’ flesh and blood, Ryan, is internalizing his father’s dangerous behaviors. Add Butcher’s limited time clock, andThe Boysseason 4 should be a fun ride like season 3 was.
