InTriangle Strategy, there is a lot of talk about salt. On the continent of Norzelia, there is only one source of salt, and people seem eager to get their hands on it. Why is salt so important inthe RPGTriangle Strategy?
What is Salt in Triangle Strategy
Salt in thethree kingdoms ofTriangle Strategyis the same as it is in the real world: the mineral that seasons food. Salt is an important part of human diets; without salt in their food, people would die in less than a month. People lose salt every day in perspiration, so someone who works physically hard needs significantly more salt than someone who doesn’t. That being said, in the real world, there are many ways to find salt, including salt deposits on land and salt from dehydrating ocean water.

The same can’t be said for Norzelia. InTriangle Strategy, the whole world relies on a single source of salt in the whole continent. It is the waters of the center of the Goddess' Shield, the capital city of theHoly Realm of Hyzante. The entire city is donut-shaped; the outer wall protects the city, and a round interior wall keeps everyone out of the Source. The Source is a shallow lake in the shape of a heart in the middle of the city, and it is made entirely of shallow, extremely salty water.
In the very center of the Source is a massive statue of the Goddess of Salt, the patron god of the Goddess' Shield. Only those granted permission by the Saintly Seven or the ruler of Hyzante are allowed inside other than the Roselle, who live and work inside the Source their whole lives.
The Roselle are slaves to the Hyzante Source; they are taught that their ancestors, blinded by greed, prevented anyone else from getting salt and therefore damned all of their souls for eternity. The only way they can cleanse their sins is to work their whole lives in the Source, digging salt for the Goddess' chosen people.
The Roselle are the only humans in Norzelia with pink hair, and this is how they are distinguished from other humans. It is said that the bloody stains of their sins are what give them their odd-colored hair. This is one of the many conflicts that set up the story ofTriangle Strategy.
One of the maincharacters inTriangle Strategyis Frederica Aesfrost, daughter of the duchy of Aesfrost and half-sister to Gustadolph, the current ruler of the land of Aesfrost is a Roselle; she is the daughter of an escaped slave of the Source.
The Saltiron War
At the beginning of the game, players are informed that the wedding of Serenoa Wolffort and Frederica Aesfrost is to cement the long, thirty-year peace between Aesfrost and theKingdom of Glenbrook. The war that took place that caused the continent to look for a peace treaty thirty years ago was called the Saltiron War, and it was the bloodiest war ever seen before on the continent.
In thisNintendo Switch-exclusive game, the war began when the Duchy of Aesfrost asked the Kingdom of Glenbrook for permission to march an army through their lands to Hyzante in exchange for equal rights to the Source when the Goddess' Shield was finally captured. Glenbrook agreed but sent no men to fight alongside those of Aesfrost. Hyzante was taken by surprise by the attack, but the city’s sturdy walls kept the army at bay.
House Wolffort, led by Serenoa’s father, went to the aid of Hyzante. Between the combined forces of Wolffort and Hyzante, they were evenly matched against the Aesfrost army, leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. It took many years for the people to even begin to beg for peace, and it took even longer for the rulers of each kingdom to agree.
While the people were tangled in this war, the Roselle took the opportunity to begin a war of their own, as players find out more than halfway throughthe 40 to 50-hour runtime ofTriangle Strategy; about half of all the slaves inside the Source revolted and escaped, finding a peaceful home inside the borders of Glenbrook under the watch of House Wolffort. These rebels were lead by Frederica’s mother, a woman who would help the Roselle to establish a small village near Wolffort Castle before continuing onto Aesfrost alone.
Finally, the war did come to an end inthisFinal Fantasy Tactics-like game. The peace talks brought down the taxes and cost of salt from the Hyzante empire, giving both Aesfrost and Glenbrook much more access to the mineral than they previously enjoyed.
However, the greedy hands of many of the Saintly Seven caused those taxes and prices to be driven up beyond pre-war prices. This was the motivation for Gustadolph to infiltrate Glenbrook, hoping to combine nights by putting the puppet ruler, Princess Cordelia, on the throne of Glenbrook, so he could control both countries and take on the might of the Holy Empire.
