TheUnchartedmovie has been in development in some capacity since 2008, at one point having Mark Wahlberg attached to star as Nathan Drake. Fast forward to 2019 and theUnchartedmovie still hasn’t seen the light of day, withSpider-Manstar Tom Holland now set to play Nathan Drake in an origin story. However, it appears as though Mark Wahlberg will still be in theUnchartedmovie, but in a different role.

It’s been reported by Variety thatMark Wahlberg is in final talks to play Victor “Sully” Sullivanin theUnchartedmovie. In theUnchartedvideo game series from Naughty Dog, Sully is Drake’s wise-cracking mentor and partner. The relationship between Drake and Sully in theUnchartedgames has earned quite a bit of praise, and it will be interesting to see if Holland and Wahlberg have similar chemistry in the film adaptation.

While multiple directors have been considered for theUnchartedmovie over the years, thecurrent director is Travis Knight ofBumblebeefame. Sony’s PlayStation Productions film studio is set to produce the film, with a tentative June 14, 2025 release date. However, with casting just now being finalized, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the movie pushed back to 2021 before it’s all said and done.

Additional details on theUnchartedmovieare scarce, but since it is apparently an origin story for Nathan Drake, fans shouldn’t expect it to follow the plots of the video games. However, it could borrow from some of the young Drake flashback sequences seen in some of the games. In fact,Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deceptionfeatured a number of flashbacks to Drake’s younger days, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some of that material translated to the movie adaptation.

If theUnchartedmovie withTom Hollandand Mark Wahlberg is a success, one has to imagine that it will kick off a new film franchise. Filmmakers have four core games and some spin-offs to draw source material from, so there’s potential for at least a fewUnchartedmovies. Of course, it’s possible thatUnchartedmovie sequels will ignore the games and carve their own path, though that remains to be seen.

Boasting considerable star power and a critically-acclaimed director, theUnchartedmovie has potential to break the video game movie curse. We’ll find out if it’s successful within the next couple of years or so.
