Kim Wexler was one of the most popular characters inBetter Call Saul, throughout the series run, and was expertly portrayed by Rhea Seahorn. Many fans speculated about her fate from the very start of the show, due to it being a prequel to the legendaryBreaking Bad, and her not appearing in the Walter White led parent show.

It is a pretty bleak ending for most of the characters onBetter Call Saul, with Howard Hamlin and Lalo Salamanca both being killed and buried next to one another, and Jimmy McGill (a.k.a Saul Goodman) getting his comeuppance with a lengthy prison sentence. Despite Gus Fring and Mike Ehrmantraut being alive at the end of the prequel’s timeline, fans ofBreaking Badknow what happened to their characters in the Walter White era. But how did it really end for Jimmy’s McGill’s ex-wife?

How does Kim’s story end on Better Call Saul?

Similar to Jesse inBreaking Bad,Kim Wexlerwas seen as the moral compass of the show in the earlier seasons, but Jimmy’s influence led her down a dark path that she struggled to come back from.

Better Call Saulhas three significant timelines, featuring the before, during and after events ofBreaking Bad. Kim’s story in the primary prequel section ends with the death of Howard Hamlin at the hands of Lalo Salamanca in one of the showsmost shocking twists. Jimmy and Kim’s vicious personal vendetta against Howard started out as innocent pranks on him, leading to a full-blown character assassination.

She feels guilty about her treatment of the man who helped build her legal career, and this leads to the end of her relationship with Jimmy. The series takes a significant time jump, and sees Jimmy McGill in his full transformation into Saul Goodman, during the events ofBreaking Bad. Kim visits his famous law office to finalize their divorce, and an awkward encounter between the pair takes place, with Saul pretending he no longer cares for his soon-to-be former wife. Kim leaves the office and has a chance encounter with none other than Jesse Pinkman, who asks her if Saul Goodman is a good lawyer, to which she replies, ‘When I knew him, he was’.

Better Call Saultransformed fully into the post-Breaking Badera in the final few episodes of the series, with the black and white segments seen at the beginning of each season, now taking center stage for an epic conclusion to Saul Goodman’s story. After a few episodes where Kim doesn’t appear, she returns, and it is revealed that she is now living in Florida, working for a sprinkler sales company, and in a new monotonous relationship. She is very sad with her new boring existence, and her appearance has changed drastically from the vibrant lawyer seen in the prequel timeline.

Kim has made a lot of terrible choices leading up to this point in the series, and inevitably, the man who contributed to those bad decisions makes a reappearance in her life. Saul Goodman, who now goes by the pseudonym of Gene Takovic, gets back in contact with Kim, but she doesn’t want to hear a word he has to say. Jimmy’s precarious position means Kim’s past is coming back to haunt her, and she provides an affidavit that reveals how Howard was murdered by Lalo, with the crime being covered up.

At Jimmy’s eventual trial, Kim watches on as Jimmy reverses his initial statement, and takes the full blame, making sure Kim doesn’t have to take the rap for anything. It transpires that Kim has started volunteering at a pro bono legal firm, giving her story a bit more hope than the rest of the characters on the show. It signifies that Kim might be able to rebuild her life, similar to Jesse’s eventual ending inEl Camino.

Jimmy/Saul was sentenced to 87 years in prison, and the show ends with Kim visiting him in prison, and the pair sharing one last cigarette. In the closing moments, Jimmy and Kim look at each other through the prison fence for one final time, before she leaves.

Will Kim return in any future spin-offs?

WhenBreaking Badended in 2013, it left fans of the show bereft without the popular crime show. However, it was soon announced that a prequel series would happen, calledBetter Call Saul, focusing on Saul Goodman’s life before he became Walter White’s lawyer. This is when the superb character of Kim Wexler was created, and she became one of the most loved characters in the Bad-verse.

Despite a tumultuous time during the show, Kim survived many close calls, and lived to tell the tale. But will she return in her own spin off one day? Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were pretty clear whenBetter Call Saulended that this would probably be the last the audience saw from the Bad-verse, meaning Kim is unlikely to get her own spin-off. However, both creators haven’t fully ruled out more stories set in this world in the future, it just won’t be happening any time soon while they explore new projects. One ofVince Gilligan’s new projects will reunite him with Rhea Seahorn in a show for Apple TV+.
