Avowedwas announced at 2020’s Xbox Showcase, but even though the first trailer had fantasy fans excited to see Obsidian’s take on anElder Scrolls-styled first-person fantasy RPG, there has been little news from the studio since. Many had hopes for E3 2021, but instead Obsidian showed anearly trailer for a sequel toThe Outer Worlds.

This has left many fans wondering when and where they can next expect to get an update aboutAvowed. There are a few possibilities for when Obsidian is most likely to give its fans an update.

The choice to revealThe Outer Worlds 2at E3 struck many fans as odd. The game’s trailer specifically parodied the fact it wasn’t far into development, while this June fans found evidence thatAvowed’s development may be further along than many thought.

There are other shows whereAvowedfans could get an update. The first isGamescom 2021, set to kick off on August 25 and end August 29. Obsidian is owned by Microsoft, which usually has a presence at Gamescom. Last year, Obsidian used the event to reveal gameplay forThe Outer Worlds’Peril on Gorgon DLC. It’s possible that a rumored E3 update aboutAvowedwas pushed back to Gamescom, possibly to make room for the greater presence of Bethesda in Xbox’s showcase.

It’s clear thatObsidian is working on multiple RPG projects, however, and ifAvowedneeded more time before a gameplay reveal it’s likely the next news drop will be in more than a few months. The Game Awards 2021 could be Obsidian fans' next best bet. The fact that Microsoft revealed the Xbox Series X/S at The Game Awards 2019 shows the company sees it as a platform for big announcements. This could make it the perfect place to reveal the game is ready.

The Big Picture

If the long wait fornews aboutThe Elder Scrolls 6has taught RPG fans anything, it’s that they shouldn’t get their hopes up for news about hotly anticipated games at every opportunity. It’s possible anAvowedgameplay reveal has been pushed back to E3 2022 or beyond. Bethesda’sStarfieldwas announced at E3 2018, and didn’t make another appearance until E3 2021.Avowed’s absence from E3 2021 and Obsidian’s choice to focus onThe Outer Worlds 2makes it seem likely thatAvowedis aiming for a release window somewhere around 2023. This, in-turn probably means, a major update to build hype in 2022.

The past year has shown just how dangerous early hype can be for large RPG projects, withCyberpunk 2077paying a huge price for the anticipation built up over nearly a decade. It’s likely RPG developers such as Obsidian kept a keen eye onCyberpunk 2077’s situation as it unfolded, and will be holding onto big reveals until under a year before the game’s release. Once again,Starfieldshows Bethesda practicing similar caution, holding onto its gameplay reveal until under six months before the new RPG’s release date.

This doesn’t meanAvowedfans can’t be excited for Gamescom andThe Game Awards 2021, but anticipation forAvowedto make a big appearance should probably be kept in check. Nonetheless, optimists among Obsidian’s fans will still be hunting for hints aboutAvowednews, and hoping that even if Obsidian doesn’t reveal gameplay soon, fans still get some sort of information about the game at one of these upcoming events.
