At Gamescom’s Opening Light Live, many viewers were wowed by the trailer forWhere Winds Meet. The cinematics and gameplay were all a visual spectacle full of gorgeous martial arts and lovely locations that spanned from historic to fantastical. Some are calling the project a game that is likeGhost of Tsushimameets the end of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdom’s era.
Where Winds Meetwas developed by an emerging Chinese-based studio called Everstone. The pretty as a painting trailer showed many gameplay elements such as combat, hunting, exploring, andhorseback riding. Locations appear vast and rich from busy towns to ships and bamboo forests. It appears there will be a lot of RPG choices as well, though the visuals might just be the most appealing part of the game.

The Beauty In The Details
If the trailer is not far off from what the gameplay will look like, players have a lot to look forward to. Thebeauty of the traileris not just in the graphics, but also seen through the details and design. The fluid movements of cloth when characters jump or the wind rustling leaves are not often thought about, but gave the trailer a haunting charm.
Colors really set a tone for places and characters as well. Trees colored in golds, greens, and reds were present, and the sky even changes from gray and dark to blue and even red. The historical architecture and items the trailer featured are a constant source of fascination, showing once again how games can get players to explore other cultures and even learn a bit of history. However, with such a pretty trailer filled with mostly cinematics, some are skeptical as to what the gameplay will bring the table. After all, it will have big competition like theAssassin’s CreedgamesandGhost of Tsushima.
What Is Known So Far
Not too much is known about the story, but the game will be set in an open world with an emphasis on player freedom. The story appears to be of theWuxia genre, which is a Chinese fiction genre which is about a martial artist hero(es) in ancient China. The main character ofWhere Winds Meetis a swordsman and can pursue different roles such as a merchant, doctor, and just a plain wanderer. Combat is not set to just swords, as the player can also engage with Wuxia-style martial arts, hand-to-hand combat, magic, and Tai Chi.
IGN has also interviewed Everstone Studios, and the developer detailed a prioritization of player freedom. With this in mind, the studio made many specializations and careers. Those that become doctors will be able to heal themselves, NPCs, and other players that are online. Gamers can also build buildings as an architect, protect NPCs as a bodyguard, or even serve as a ferryman that transports NPCs.
Player Hopes And Concerns
A lot of players are not happy thatWhere Winds Meetis only going to be available for PC, but it is possible that the game will later come out for consoles if it proves popular enough. While many gamers want to seemore games that explore Chinese culture, there are concerns that the actual game’s visuals will be a major downgrade from what is shown in the trailer. This is a concern that happens a lot when trailers mostly consist of cinematic scenes rather than gameplay, which is a description that fitsWhere Winds Meet’s first bit of footage.
The lack of a release date has also made gamers skeptical. Everstone Studio is a new developer, so there is little to go on in terms of predicting the game’s quality. As such, gamers should not set their expectations too high or too low, and should instead be patient to see what comes next in the development of this gorgeous looking title.
