Even despite the wholeCyberpunk 2077debacle, CD Projekt Red is still generally considered to be one of the best RPG developers out there, and a massive reason for that is its work on theWitcherseries. Beginning work on the fantasy franchise in 2007, it took a few years for CD Projekt Red’sWitcherseries to really hit the mainstream, withthe release ofThe Witcher 3: The Wild Huntin 2015being the studio’s first huge hit. And now, after a brief hiatus, CD Projekt Red looks to continue itsWitchersaga, though it might not feature all of the characters fans would expect.

While CD Projekt Red’s remake of the firstWitchergame is slated for release next, the developer also hasthree newWitcherprojects in the works. Currently codenamedProject Sirius,Project Polaris, andProject Canis Majoris, theseWitchertitles will form a brand newWitchersaga for the developer, and though little is known about them, it seems unlikely that CD Projekt Red would carry over the same beloved characters as its originalWitchertrilogy - though Ciri could be the exception to that.

Ciri Might Be the Only Returning Character in the New Witcher Saga

In October of last year, CD Projekt Red gave brief breakdowns of all of its upcomingWitcherprojects.Project Siriusis aWitchertitle being developed by The Molasses Flood which is apparently targeting a “broader audience,” and will contain some kind of multiplayer component.Project Canis Majorishas an even vaguer description, with CD Projekt Red simply stating that this will be another “fully-fledgedWitcherproduction.” But the truly exciting project isPolaris, a brand-new trilogy designed to “open the newWitchersaga” and expand on the storytelling onThe Witcher 3.

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, reading between the lines it seems as though theProject Polaristrilogy will follow on from the events ofThe Witcher 3in some way, but withCD Projekt Redstating that this series will begin a new saga, it seems pretty unlikely that this new trilogy follows on directly. Instead, it’s much more likely thatProject Polaristakes place a good few decades after the events ofWitcher 3, giving time for the world to heal from the Wild Hunt’s antics, just before a new threat arises.

IfProject Polarisand the newWitchersaga do take place a fair while in the future, then it’s also pretty unlikely that fans will get to control Geralt of Rivia once more. While Witchers age at an incredibly slow rate, with Geralt technically being between 90 and 100 by the time ofThe Witcher 3, they aren’t immortal, and if the new saga ends up being set quite far in the future then Geralt might have died, along with the rest ofThe Witcher’s iconic cast, most of which also age very slowly. And if this is the case, then the most likely candidate for a new playable protagonist is Ciri.

With Elder Blood running through her veins, Ciri has access to a plethora of god-like abilities, with one of her most powerful being the ability to travel through space and time, and even different dimensions. Fans get to see this power in action throughoutThe Witcher 3, with Ciri popping in and out of other dimensions and time periods to gather artifacts and escape from enemies. If the newWitchersaga ends up being set in the future, or even in the unlikely event that it’s set far in the past, Ciri is likely the only character from the original trilogy that could appear, with her dimension-hopping abilities letting her show up just about anywhere.

NewWitchergames are in development.
